1.) There have been disheartening and graphic moments of police brutality that have been inexcusable. There have also been an 28% increase of deaths
among police officers according to the FBI. My question is, how would you improve the relationship between citizens/communities and law enforcement,
keep police officers accountable, and still give enough power to police officers to enforce the law?
Now is the time for Congress to take meaningful steps to end police brutality, hold them accountable to the community, increase transparency, and have open
dialogue about justice and equality. On 6/25/20, my colleagues and I passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act (HR 7120), a bold proposal to combat racism
and brutality in law enforcement. It would hold police accountable by addressing qualified immunity, which has shielded officers from justice; improve
transparency by collecting and maintaining more accurate data of police misconduct and use-of-force; establish a National Police Misconduct Registry to prevent
officers from changing jurisdictions to avoid accountability; and would ban racial and religious profiling, and chokeholds.
While this is a bold step forward, systemic racism will not be solved by legislative action alone. It will only be solved if we unite as a nation to understand,
condemn, and act decisively to end racism in every corner of society.
Question 2:
2.) Do you believe in woman's choice (abortion rights)? If so, do you also believe in the option for late-term abortions?
I firmly believe every woman should be free to make her own reproductive choices, in consultation with her family and her doctor — not politicians. I am
disheartened by the continuing attacks by the Trump Administration and in Congress on women’s health, and I remain steadfast in my commitment to protecting a
woman’s constitutionally protected right to choose. That's why I have consistently opposed dangerous, ideologically driven legislation that would endanger
women’s medical safety and undermine their access to the full range of reproductive health services and birth control. I am a cosponsor of the Women’s Health
Protection Act (H.R. 2975), which would put into law a woman’s right to reproductive health care, including abortion services. As long as these attacks continue, I
will continue fighting back against efforts to weaken or block access to critical family planning services for women everywhere.
Question 3:
3.) What's your plan on fighting Covid-19? (Like: how to keep families safe, what's the best way to re-open schools/the economy)
We must listen to science and follow the data. There cannot be political interference during a public health emergency. If that was done from the start we’d have a
better grasp on this virus and had a stronger response, saving lives. To move forward, we need a comprehensive national response. Congress needs to approve
another relief package to address the public health concerns and economic impact, and to ensure essential workers are paid. We passed the Heroes Act back in May
and an updated version this month, but Republican inaction has left communities behind as more get infected and lose their livelihoods.
At the start of the pandemic I led the House effort to secure $950 million for state and local public health departments and to guarantee those dollars can be used to
backfill expenses already incurred - a critical provision for our state which was responding to the virus weeks before any other. That resulted in $11.5 million to
support our initial response plus additional funding going forward.
I also introduced a bipartisan bill (which was included in both versions of Heroes!) to help keep 60 million workers on payroll. This will ease strain on our
unemployment system, provide job security, and better position businesses to reopen when it’s safe. It’s vital we provide our health care system with resources to
respond, ensure additional relief to families, and support our economy.
4.) What's your view on gun control?
The United States suffers from more gun violence incidents than any other developed country. We must do better. As a mother, I am sickened and outraged by the
seemingly never-ending incidents of gun violence. That is why I have cosponsored and helped advance several pieces of legislation to end this vicious cycle of gun
violence. On February 27, 2019, the Bipartisan Background Check Act (H.R. 8) passed the House with my support, by a vote of 240-190. Our federal laws do not
cover intrastate transactions between unlicensed individuals, allowing firearms to be transferred or purchased online or at a gun show without a background check.
H.R. 8 would close this dangerous loophole and make it illegal for unlicensed individuals to transfer or sell a firearm to another unlicensed individual without a
background check. Additionally, on December 17, 2019, the House passed, with my support, an appropriations bill (H.R. 1865) that will provide $25 million split
between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for gun violence research. This represents the first
federal investment for gun violence research in 20 years.
I am also a co-sponsor of the Assault Weapons Ban Act (H.R. 1296), that would ban the importation, sale, manufacture, transfer, and possession of a semi-
automatic weapon or large-capacity ammunition. Lastly, I am a cosponsor of the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act (H.R. 1236), that would support state, local,
and tribal government efforts to temporarily remove firearms from individuals who pose a risk to themselves or others.
