Introduction to Windows OS
Some Terminology
• Drive
• hard drive C:\
• floppy drive A:\
• additional B:\ or D:\ or F:\ or H:\ or G:\
• Folder
• used to organize the data stored on your drives
• Directory
• path given to a folder on a drive
• e.g. C: \My Documents\PhoneNumbers.txt
• File Extension
• ending letters associated with a file and an application (e.g. .txt
above) that it can be manipulated in
• Icon
• graphic image that helps you execute commands quickly
File Extensions
• Some common extensions are as follows:
• .doc = Microsoft Word Document
• .xls = Microsoft Excel Document
• .ppt = Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation
• .mdb = Microsoft Access Database
• .bmp = Windows Bitmap Picture
• .wav = Sound File
• .html or .htm = Internet Document
• The program you use will automatically assign
extension for you.
• All you need to do is to give it a filename.

Shutdown Computer
To shut down a computer, do the following
1. Click on the Start at bottom left corner
of screen
2. Click on Shutdown (A Shut Down
Windows dialog box will appear)
3. Click on Shut Down
4. Click on OK

If you choose Restart the computer will

Windows Explorer is a program which allows you to view all


of your folders, and the files that belong in those folders
Creating and Deleting File/Folder
• Creating a Folder
• Select the Drive or Folder you want to create your
Folder in
• Right click in the right pane in the white area
• Select New
• Select Folder
• Type in name for that Folder

• Deleting a file or folder


• Select the File/Folder you want to delete
• Hit the Delete Key on the keyboard
• Confirm Deletion
Moving/Copying File/Folder
• Moving/Copying files to different folders
• Select the Folder you want to move or copy
• To Move File - Simply drag it to the destination you want it to go to
• To Copy File - Click on Edit --> Copy from the top of the screen.
• Then go to the destination folder and click Edit --> Paste
• Copying a file/folder to a floppy disk
• Select the Folder you want to move or copy
• Right click on the file or folder in the right pane
• Select Send To -->
• Select 3.5 Floppy (A: )
• You can also drag the file to 3.5" Floppy (A: \) in the left pane
• Copying a file/folder from a floppy disk to other drive
• Select 3.5 Floppy (A: ) in the left pane
• Select the File/Folder you want to copy from in the floppy drive
• Drag it to your destination
• Renaming a File or Folder
• Select the File or Folder you want to rename
• Right Click on it
• Select Rename
• Rename File
