ASSIGNMENT 5.

1 – Heat Energy
INSTRUCTIONS:
Solve the following problems on a long-size bond papers HANDWRITTEN. After solving the
problems, take a photo of your preparations using your camera phone or a scanner. Convert the
file to any of the following: pdf, jpg, jpeg, or png and submit the same by uploading to the LMS
not later than Oct 15, 2020, 8:00 PM. The system only allows ONE FILE of submission. So, be
sure to arrange your answer sheets in such a way that you can capture them in only one shot.
Pdf file is more convenient because you can merge two or more pages in one file. After you
uploaded your file in the LMS, preview it to check if it is corrupted. Unreadable file invalidates
your submission. As such you will receive no points.
File name should be type as follows:
delaCruz.Juan_ME2A.pdf
or
delaCruz.Juan_ME2A.jpg
or
delaCruz.Juan_ME2A.png

Be sure to write your name, Course Yr. and Section on your answer sheet.
Failure to follow these instructions will result to a maximum of 20 points deduction to your score.
Please be guided accordingly.
PROBLEMS: 25 points each.
1. The north wall of an electrically heated home is 20 ft long, 10 ft high, and 1 ft thick, and is
made of brick whose thermal conductivity is k = 0.42 Btu/h · ft · °F. On a certain winter night,
the temperatures of the inner and the outer surfaces of the wall are measured to be at about
62°F and 25°F, respectively, for a period of 8 hours. Determine (a) the rate of heat loss
through the wall that night and (b) the cost of that heat loss to the homeowner if the cost of
electricity is $0.07/kWh.

2. A heat flux meter attached to the inner surface of a 3-cm-thick refrigerator door indicates a
heat flux of 25 W/m2 through the door. Also, the temperatures of the inner and the outer
surfaces of the door are measured to be 7°C and 15°C, respectively. Determine the average
thermal conductivity of the refrigerator door.

3. A wall 2 cm thick is to be constructed from material that has an average thermal conductivity
of 1.3 W/m・C. The wall is to be insulated with material having an average thermal
conductivity of 0.35W/m・ C, so that the heat loss per square meter will not exceed 1830W.
Assuming that the inner and outer surface temperatures of the insulated wall are 1300 and
30C, calculate the thickness of insulation required.

4. A furnace wall made of fire clay has a thickness of 12 inches. The wall is insulated from
outside. Thermal conductivity values for the wall and insulation materials are 0.1 W/m·K and
0.01 W/m·K, respectively. The furnace operates at 6500C. Average ambient temperature
outside the furnace wall is 300C. Determine the overall heat transfer across the wall per unit
area in W/m2.
