Discussion:
“Information and Communication Technology”

The term ICT or the Information Communication Technology refers to the various
technologies, tools, and devices that are used to gather, create, edit, and store information
that are communicated or exchanged with other by means of electronics.
It deals with the interconnection between different technology-related platforms such as
the Internet, software and hardware used, the cloud, the data exchanged, and
transactions or the act of doing the exchange itself.
It is the result of economic and social or interpersonal transaction and interaction. It has
become an integral part of our daily social involvement and interaction.

COMPUTER
It is an electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in binary form,
according to instructions given to it in a variable program.

INTERNET
It is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use the internet
protocol suite (TCIP/IP) to link billions of devices worldwide. It is composed of millions of
small computer networks all brought together to form the vast “Inter- Network”.

Uses of Internet:
 Communication
 Shopping
 Leisure and Entertainment

Benefits of the Internet:

 It is always available
 Offers a vast range of information
 It serves as a means to communicate with people
 Offers a wide access to learn about other cultures
 Information on the Internet is readily updated.

WORLD WIDE WEB

 An information system on the internet that allows documents to be connected to

other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to search for information by
moving from one document to another.

 Large part of the internet.

WEBSITE

 A location connected to the Internet that maintains one or more pages on the World
Wide Web.
(Examples: facebook.com, Youtube.com, Gmail.com. etc.)

WEBPAGE
 Web page is a hypertext document connected to the World Wide Web.   It is a
document that is   suitable for the World Wide Web.

WEB BROWSERS

 Search engine: a tool for searching.

(Examples: Google Chrome, Opera, Mozilla Firefox. etc.)

The different online platforms of World Wide Web:

WEB 1.0

 It refers to the first stage in the World Wide Web, which was entirely made up of the
Web pages connected by hyperlinks. The page is ‘’as is’’ and cannot be
manipulated by the user.

WEB 2.0

 Is the evolution of Web 1.0 by adding dynamic pages. The user is able to see
a website differently than others.

 Allows users to interact with the page; instead of just reading the page, the user may
be able to comment or create user account.

Features of WEB 2.0

1. Folksonomy- allows user to categorize and classify information using freely chosen

keywords.
2. Rich User Experience – content is dynamic and is responsive to user’s input
3. User Participation- The owner of the website is not the only one who is able to put
content. Others are able to place a content of their own by means of comments, reviews
and evaluation.
4. Long Tail– services that are offered on demand rather than on a one-time purchase.
5. Software as a service- user will subscribe to a software only when needed rather than
purchasing them.
6. Mass Participation– diverse information sharing through universal web access.

WEB 3.0
 this platform is all about semantic web.
 Aims to have machines (or servers) understand the user’s preferences to be able to
deliver web content.

Features of WEB 3.0

 Intelligence- It is incorporated with different artificial intelligence tools and techniques

that mean it can directly do analysis with possible finest output even without much
human intervention.
 Personalization- personal and individual preferences of the user is considered.
 Interoperability- easy to customize and can independently work on different kind of
devices.
 Virtualization- uses a high end three-dimensional graphics to create a 3D environment
for 3D web applications.

STATIC WEB PAGE

 Is known as a flat page or stationary age in the sense that the page is ‘’as is’’ and
cannot be manipulated by the user.

DYNAMIC WEB PAGES

 Web 2.0 is the evolution of web 1.0 by adding dynamic web pages. The user is able to
see website differently than others e.g. social networking sites, wikis, video sharing
sites.
