Token Economy

This document outlines a token economy system called "Charlie's Cash" to encourage positive behaviors in a student named Charlie. Charlie can earn fake money called "Charlie's Cash" for behaviors like following rules and cooperating. Charlie can exchange the cash for art supplies. The system will be tested for 2 days then fully implemented. Over time, fewer behaviors will be targeted and the rewards faded out. Charlie and her teachers will be trained on how the system works.

Charlie and I will review the day and count the amount of Charlie’s Cash that has been
accumulated. If Charlie has saved enough, she may cash her tokens in for the coinciding
reward at the “Art Chest.” The “Art Chest” is a small box of art supplies. Charlie must cash in
every 7 days. The student has the opportunity to cash in tokens twice per day.
Fading Token Economy
● After the student has earned $500 + “Charlie’s Cash” tokens per day, for one
week, I will begin to decrease the value of the tokens for each target
behavior.
● I may eliminate target behaviors over the course of a semester, if the student
is able to demonstrate progress and achievement of a goal.
● Eventually, the student will be able to focus more on 2-3 behaviors.
● The student will be more focused on meeting the goals than the rewards.
● By the third nine weeks, the token economy will be faded out.
Token Economy Training: Student
● I will first discuss the token economy with the students’ parents
○ Agree with the modified behavior plan
○ Reinforce at home
● The student and I will discuss the goals and “Charlie’s Cash” tokens
● Practice the rules of the token economy regularly until student is
responsible
● Have Charlie participate in choosing backup reinforcers
Token Economy Training: Teacher/Staff
● Meeting with Charlie’s other teachers and review the token economy rules
● Each teacher/staff will have “Charlie’s Cash” tokens to have ready and
distribute to the student along with the list of target behaviors and earning
chart.
● The teacher/staff will give me the “Charlie’s Cash” token that the student has
earned until the student can eventually become responsible for taking the
tokens back to the classroom.
● I will communicate with other teachers and staff to review Charlie’s progress
daily
