Interconnection Earthing System
Interconnection Earthing System
Date : 02/09/2020.
Dear Sir,
With reference to your query regarding interconnection of Earthing systems as per the subject
standards, please note that referring to below clauses from IEC/ BS EN and NFPA , it is evident that
interconnection of earthing systems is a preferred and recommended practice which helps in overall
reduction of resistance of earthing network and providing an equi-potentially bonded earthing system.
"From the viewpoint of lightning protection, a single integrated structure earth-termination system is
preferable and is suitable for all purposes (i.e. lightning protection, power systems and
telecommunication systems)."
However approval and agreement of local authority or the owner of the system should be obtained.
American NFPA 780 standard which states in clauses 4.14.1 and 4.14.1.1:
4.14.1 - All grounding media and buried metallic conductors that can assist in providing a path for
lightning currents in or on a structure shall be interconnected to provide a common ground potential.
4.14.1.1 This interconnection shall include lightning protection, electric service, communications, and
antenna system grounds as well as underground metallic piping systems.
Yours faithfully,
