ECEN 689 - Summer 2020 Quiz 2

This document provides instructions for Quiz 2 in ECEN 689 during the summer of 2020. Students are instructed that they may use class notes and the textbook to complete the quiz, but should not consult any other online sources. They must complete the quiz individually without help from others. The quiz consists of 3 problems: 1) finding a function with a given gradient, 2) computing the divergence and curl of 2 vector fields, and determining where each is zero, and 3) showing path independence and computing a line integral for another vector field. Students can use a calculator but should show steps. They can ask the instructor to clarify questions but not for help solving problems.

please show enough of the steps so that I can understand how you got your answers.
 If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the me. Since it is a quiz, I will not
help you solve the problems, but I will be glad to clarify the questions if needed.

1. Find a function 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) that has a gradient given by ∇𝑓 = [𝑥 + 𝑦, 𝑥 + 4𝑦].

2. For the vector field given by 𝒗 = [𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 , 𝑦 2 + 𝑧 2 , 𝑥 2 + 𝑧 2 ],

a. Find the divergence, ∇ ∙ 𝒗, and determine in what region of 3D space is the divergence
0.
b. Find the curl, ∇x𝒗, and determine in what region of 3D space is the curl 0.

3. For the vector field given by 𝒗 = [𝑥 3 − 3𝑥𝑦 2 , 𝑦 3 − 3𝑥 2 𝑦],

a. Show that the path integral ∫𝐶 𝒗 ∙ 𝑑𝒓 is path independent,
b. Compute ∫𝐶 𝒗 ∙ 𝑑𝒓 for a path that starts at the origin and ends at (1,1). You may select
any convenient path.
