The document summarizes key points about earthquakes from videos and research watched and conducted by the author. Some main points include: Earthquakes are caused by a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves and can damage structures. They typically occur along fault lines when built-up stress overcomes friction. Ground shaking can collapse buildings and disrupt utilities, while triggering other hazards like landslides. The largest quakes occur in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Aftershocks are common after the main quake as the crust adjusts. The author wants to design seismically sound tall buildings to prevent collapse and ensure safety.

Review Paper
Earthquake is the shaking of Earth resulting from sudden release of energy in the
earth’s lithasphere that creates seismic waves. This shaking can result in the damage of
various structures such as buildings and further breakdown of the Earth's surface.

An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip on a fault when the stress on the edge overcomes
the friction, there is an earthquake the friction, there is an earthquake the releases energy in
waves that travel through the earth’s crust and cause the shaking that we feel. And many
structures destroyed.

Ground shaking from earthquake can cause buildings and bridges to collapse, disrupt the
gas, electricity, and telephone services, and sometimes trigger landslides, avalanches, flash,
floods, fires and tsunami. And also people panic because of the earthquake.
Shallow crevasses can form during earthquake induced landslides, lateral spreads, or from
other types of ground failures, but faults do not open up during an earthquake.

The world’ greatest earthquake belt, the circum- Pacific seismic belt, is found along the
rim of the pacific ocean, where about 81 percent of planet’s largest earthquake occur.

Most earthquak directly beneath a volcano are caused by the movement of magma. The
magma exerts pressure on the rock until it cracks the rock. Then the magma squirt into the
crack and starts building pressure again. Every time the rock cracks it makes a small
earthquake.

Aftershocks are normal, they show that the earth’s crust is readjusting after the main
earthquake. The number of felt aftershocks is quite variable and this cannot be predicted.

Based on my research the USGS scientists can only calculate the probability that
significant earthquake will occur in specific area within a certain number of years.
As a future civil engineer, I want to design a building having a seismic controll especially
for taller buildings so that the buildings does not collapse and for the safety of the people.
