Tutorial Problem Set 2 Compressible Flow

The document contains 4 tutorial problems about compressible flow involving air flow through diffusers and nozzles. Problem 1 involves calculating the inlet diameter, outlet diameter, and temperature rise for a diffuser reducing air velocity from 245 m/s to 60 m/s. Problem 2 involves calculating the Mach number, temperature, and velocity at a point where pressure is 30 kPa given initial conditions. Problem 3 involves calculating temperature and pressure at the outlet of a converging channel where the Mach number increases from 0.3 to 0.8. Problem 4 involves calculating properties at 2 locations - where pressure is 200 kPa and where the Mach number is 1.5, given inlet conditions.

Compressible Flow

Use Gas Tables for solving the problems.

1. Air at 300 K and 1×105 Pa enters a diffuser with a velocity of 245 m/s. The
diffuser is to be designed to reduce the velocity of the air to 60 m/s. The mass
flow rate through the diffuser is 13.6 kg/s. Assuming the flow to be
isentropic, determine (a) the inlet diameter, (b) the outlet diameter and (c)
rise in static temperature.

2. The velocity, pressure, and temperature at a certain point in a steady air

flow are 600 m/s, 70 kPa, and 5 °C, respectively. If the pressure at some
other point in the flow is 30 kPa, find the Mach number, temperature, and
velocity that exist at this second point. Assume that the flow is isentropic
and one-dimensional.

3. Air flows isentropically in a convergent channel. At section 1 of the channel,

the Mach number is 0.3, the area is 0.001 m2, the pressure and the
temperature are 650 kPa and 62 °C, respectively. At section 2, the Mach
number is 0.8. Evaluate temperature and pressure at section 2. Depict the
stagnation and static states for this flow process in a T-s diagram.

4. Air flows from a large vessel in which the pressure is 300 kPa and the
temperature is 40 °C through a nozzle. (i) If the pressure at some section of
the discharge nozzle is measured as 200 kPa, find the temperature and
velocity at this section. (ii) If the Mach number at some other section of the
nozzle is 1.5, find the pressure, temperature, and velocity at this section.
Assume that the flow is steady, isentropic, and one-dimensional.
