Lesson Plan: Lesson: Grade Level: Group Size
Lesson Plan: Lesson: Grade Level: Group Size
For 4/27/2020
Lesson: Using money at the store.
Grade Level: 2th Grade
Group Size: Instruction on the decimal system will already be previously taught to the class.
There should be instruction teaching the classroom as a whole about United States currency and
the value of each item (coins/bills) as well as a few practice problems that will be solved in
groups of 4 or 5. These groups of students are already divided up by table groups. (See
attendance sheet for reference). The main activity will be conducted in these same groups. There
will not be any switching people to different groups unless a student needs to be moved due to
behavior.
Subject: Mathematics
Standards:
Objectives:
➢ Students will learn the individual value for each coin and bill in US currency: $1 bill, $2
bill, $5 bill, $10 bill, $20 bill, $50 bill, $100 bill, penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar,
dollar coin.
➢ Students will understand the decimal system for each individual value of each coin/bill.
➢ Students will learn how to add money in order to “buy” an item by using addition and the
decimal system.
Materials:
Instruction:
➢ Computer
➢ Projector
➢ Powerpoint on desktop named AddingCurrency.pptx
➢ Whiteboard and markers
➢ Mini white boards and markers for each student (Each student should have
one in their desks. Extras are kept in the storage cabinet next to the
teachers desk.)
➢ Fake bills and coins. You can find this bucket of plastic coins and paper
bills in a red bin labeled “money” inside the storage cabinet next the
teachers desk).
Activity:
➢ Worksheet page named AddingCurrency.pdf on desktop. There should
already be worksheets printed out on my desk but if needed extras, print
them out.
➢ Pencils
➢ Laminated food pictures. There should be 50 fruits/vegetables/food
different images.
➢ Menu/Sales price page printed for each group.
➢ Fake bills and coins. They are already separated in bins.
Procedure:
Instruction:
First, make sure that the projector is turned on. There is a circular button with ⌾ which is
on/off button on the projector. Make sure that the input/setting is HDMI 1. It will take
around a minute for the projector to show the computer screen. Then go ahead and click
on the AddingCurrency.pptx to open it. Click on the top ribbon/bar, click View and hover
down the dropdown menu and click present. The slideshow should go full screen on the
computer’s monitor and on the projector.
Before starting the lesson, check that each student has a mini whiteboard and a marker.
You will be using the whiteboard that is blank for examples that you will show to the
students. Students will use their whiteboards to answer examples shown on the
powerpoint. They are to provide their reasoning and work to get the answer. The
example questions will be on the powerpoint.
You will teach accordingly to each slide. Please answer any questions related to the
subject at the end of each slide. The slide show will go in this order:
Slide 1-2: Review of the decimal system.
Slide 3: Practice problems on decimal system. (Let the class try to solve than you solve
on the whiteboard)
Slide 4: Introduction to currency. Show how and why we use money. Show students the
fake currency when talking about each coin and bill.
Slide 5-8: the value of each bill and coin and the numerical value of each bill and coin on
the decimal system.
Slide 9-14: Examples of fulfilling a total at the grocery store by paying with physical
currency. You will conduct the first two problems and let the students solve the next
problems.
Once done with the presentation and answering any questions, begin the activity.
Activity:
First hand out the worksheet mentioned in materials. Direct the students to go ahead and
put their name on the worksheet. On the worksheet is an organizer where one the left side
of the page they must draw and label the items they are “purchasing” with the price
underneath the picture. On the right side of the organizer, the student must draw the bills
and coins for the items and addition of numbers with decimals. They could draw them as
boxes with the numerical value of the bill and circles with the numerical value of the coin
inside the circle. Menu’s/Sales price papers are given to each table which indicates the
price of each item/picture. Each table will receive 10 items of food and a box full of fake
money. Students are required to display the correct amount of fake money next to the
image of the food and make combinations of two items to create a total which they will
then write on their worksheet. Go around and see if students progress and collect the
worksheet after 30 minutes.
Assessment:
A students progress will be overviewed when talking about the subjects of addition of numbers
with decimals. If they are having trouble, there will be more help shown to the student by asking
them more questions in regards to their work or study. These objectives will not be a one day
thing but rather the lesson being a foundation for harder math problems in the future. Students
will then be graded on a test consisting of them drawing bills and coins and adding multiple
money values together with pictures on the assessment. In order for a student to receive full
points, they must either show drawings or numerical addition.
