1 Quarter Grade 9 Science: Ms. Elona Padrones Ix-Avogadro

This document provides an overview of the respiratory system for a 9th grade science class. It outlines the learning competencies which include explaining how the respiratory and circulatory systems work together to transport gases and molecules through the body. It then describes the key parts of the respiratory system and their functions. These include the nasal cavity which warms and moistens air, the pharynx and larynx which form the passageway for air and food, the epiglottis which prevents food from entering the windpipe, the lungs which are paired organs that absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide, and the alveoli within the lungs which facilitate the exchange of gases between the bloodstream and air.

1 QUARTER
GRADE 9 SCIENCE

MS. ELONA PADRONES

IX-AVOGADRO
LESSON 1: RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Content
1. Living things and their environment
1. Respiratory and Circulatory Systems working with the other Organ Systems
Learning Competencies
1.1 Explain how the respiratory and circulatory work together to transport nutrients,
gases, and other molecules to and from the different parts of the body.
1.2 Identify the key parts of the breathing system and describe the function of each part
of the breathing system.
1.3 Explain how the lungs work.
1.4 Describe how the movement of the diaphragm helps the air go in and out of the lungs.

Function of the Respiratory System

The respiratory system is a series of organs responsible for taking in oxygen and
expelling carbon dioxide. The primary organs of the respiratory are the lungs, which carry out
this exchange of gases as we breath.

Inhale- taking oxygen

Exhale- expelling carbon dioxide

Parts and Function of Respiratory System

Nasal Cavity
- warms and moistens incoming air so it doesn’t dry out sensitive lung cell that has to remain
wet.

Pharynx (throat)
- passageway that leads from the oral and nasal cavity to the esophagus ang larynx.

Epiglottis
-the main function of epiglottis is to seal off the windpipe during eating, so that food is not
accidentally inhaled.

Larynx
-commonly called the voice box, is an organ in the top of the neck involved in breathing,
producing sound and protecting the trachea against food aspiration.
Lungs
-are a pair of spongy, air filled organs located on the either side of the chest.

Alveoli (plural) Alveolus (singular)

-the function of the alveoli is to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules to and from the
bloodstream.

Diaphragm
