1.0 Course Synopsis

Role and characteristics of rail transportation. Types of gauges and their selection. Cross-
sectional elements of a railway track, their functions and requirements. Rail failures and
defects. Coning wheels, creep of rails. Rail fixtures and fastening. Geometrical design of rail
track. Railway station yards and equipment. Signalling and interlocking. Train resistances
and stresses in a railway track, tractive effort and traction. Construction and maintenance of a
railway track and track drainage.

2.0 Course Overview

The course will be a comprehensive introduction to the features of railway engineering and
rail infrastructure and their impacts on the society and on the environment. The course will
focus on railway planning, track alignment, track geometry, superstructure and substructure
components together with construction, operation and maintenance of such railway facilities.

 Track Stresses and Track Resistance
 Track Maintenance
 Railway Crossings
 Track Drainage
 Railway Accidents
 Railway Station Yards
 Construction of New Tracks
 Signalling and Interlocking
 Railway Tunnelling

4.0 Objectives of the Course (Expected Learning Outcomes)

At the end of the course, the candidate should have an understanding of:
 fundamental principles for railway engineering
 environmental and societal impacts of railway transportation infrastructure
 basic track geometric parameters
 design of railway track geometry
 railway superstructure and substructure components
