syllabus for Grade 9

First term

Session 2020– 2021

ENGLISH

Skills to cover:

 Listening skills: Students will be able to listen to any verbal communication with a reasonable degree of
understanding.

 Speaking Skills: Students will be tested on their ability to speak clearly, using grammatically complete
and correct sentences through discussions on subject topics, presentations, quiz etc.

 Reading Skills: Students will be able to read unseen texts with understanding the meaning of lexical
items and answer questions based on it.

 Writing Skills: The students will be able to express themselves by writing summaries, genres and
compositions.

Exam Question Pattern:

Paper 1 (Reading)

Comprehension (20% marks): Pupils will be given an unseen text to read and asked to answer various types
of questions that test their reading skills (understanding of explicit and implicit meanings).

Summary (15% marks): Pupils will be given an unseen text to read and asked to write a summary that tests
their reading skill (selecting and using information for specific purposes) and writing skills (organising and
structuring ideas and opinions for deliberate effect, using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures
appropriate to context & making accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar)

Writer’s Choice of Words (15% marks): Pupils will be given an unseen text to read and asked to answer four
questions that test their reading skills (understanding of explicit and implicit meanings and attitudes,
understanding of how writers achieve effects and influence readers)
Response/Directed Writing (25% marks): Based on the text given for Writer’s choice of Words pupils will be
asked to write any ONE of the following genres:

 Dialogue
 Interview
 Letter (informal)

This tests their reading skills (understanding of explicit meanings, understanding of implicit meanings and
attitudes, & analysing, evaluating and developing facts, ideas and opinions, using appropriate support from
the text) and writing skills (articulating experience and expressing what is thought, felt and imagined,
organising and structuring ideas and opinions for deliberate effect, using a range of vocabulary and sentence
structures appropriate to context, using register appropriate to context and making accurate use of spelling,
punctuation and grammar)

Paper 2 (Directed Writing and Composition)

Response/ Directed Writing (25% marks): Based on the text given for Writer’s Choice of Words pupils will be
asked to write any ONE of the following genres:

 Persuasive Speech

This tests their reading skills (understanding of explicit meanings, understanding of implicit meanings and
attitudes, & analysing, evaluating and developing facts, ideas and opinions, using appropriate support from
the text and selecting and using information for specific purposes) and writing skills (articulating experience
and expressing what is thought, felt and imagined, organising and structuring ideas and opinions for
deliberate effect, using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures appropriate to context, using register
appropriate to context and making accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar)

Directed Writing (25% marks): Pupils will be given two texts to read and asked to write a genre (Official
Report, News Report, Persuasive Article and Persuasive Speech) that tests their reading skills
(understanding of explicit meanings, understanding of implicit meanings and attitudes, & analysing,
evaluating and developing facts, ideas and opinions, using appropriate support from the text and selecting
and using information for specific purposes) and writing skills (articulating experience and expressing what is
thought, felt and imagined, organising and structuring ideas and opinions for deliberate effect, using a range
of vocabulary and sentence structures appropriate to context, using register appropriate to context and
making accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar)

Composition (25% marks): Students will be asked to write on ONE of the following topics:

 two descriptive topics


 two narrative topics

This tests their writing skills (articulating experience and expressing what is thought, felt and imagined,
organising and structuring ideas and opinions for deliberate effect, using a range of vocabulary and sentence
structures appropriate to context, using register appropriate to context, making accurate use of spelling,
punctuation and grammar).

Paper 1: Composition 1½ hours, 90 marks Section A: Letter(30 marks)

letter, report, dialogue or speech of about 120 words in Bengali.

topics, candidates must write one essay of about 200 words in Bengali.

about 280 words. Section C: Comprehension (open-ended questions)

Students must answer six questions based on a prose passage of about
270 words. A vocabulary question will follow the comprehension
questions in this section.
