Word Processing Software

Word processing software is used to manipulate a text document, such as a resume or a

report. You typically enter text by typing, and the software provides tools for copying, deleting
and various types of formatting. There are a number of different word processing applications.
One of the most widely used ones is Word, which is part of Microsoft Office. Another widely
used one is WordPerfect by the Corel Corporation. A third one is Writer, which is part of
OpenOffice by Apache. While the first two are commercial software, OpenOffice is open source
and can be downloaded and used free of charge. Finally, there is Pages, which is part of iWork
by Apple.

While there are many differences between the various word processing applications,
they all accomplish pretty much the same thing. Which one you use is partly a matter of
personal preference. It is also important to consider which software is being used by the people
you normally collaborate with. In many cases, people within the same organization will use the
same software to make it easier to share documents or to work on the same document
together.

Example:

1. Microsoft Word

Figure 1.0
Microsoft Word is a complex program used by people for a variety of functions, including
business people writing memos and reports, students taking notes in class, home users writing
informal or formal correspondence, and people designing flyers and banners to promote
events. Microsoft Word is a word processing program that is part of the Microsoft Office Suite
package. The main purpose of Word is to create text documents that can be saved
electronically, printed on paper or saved as PDF files. Microsoft Word allows you to create text
documents.

Word has features designed for each of these types of users. Current versions of the
software also include collaboration features designed to make it easy for multiple users to
share documents and work on them together. Some feature of Microsoft are Convert a List to a
Table, convert a bulleted list to smart art, create a custom tab. Add placeholder text, and quick
selection methods.

2. Word Star

Figure 1.1

WordStar was a word processor application, published by MicroPro, originally written

for the CP/M operating system but later ported to DOS, that enjoyed a dominant market share
during the early-to-mid-1980s. Seymour I. Rubinstein was the principal owner of the company.
WordStar is still considered by many to be one of the best examples of a "writing
program". Because it was designed for text-only display devices with only a single, functional
typeface, the primary focus was on the text, without direct onscreen WYSIWYG formatting.
Because typesetting and layout were secondary or tertiary functions left for after the document
was written, edited, and proofread, the writer was not distracted by the many formatting
possibilities presented by later word processors.

3. Corel Word Perfect

Figure 1.2

WordPerfect is a word processing system that was originally produced by Satellite

Software International Inc. but is now owned by Corel. It was best known for its availability on a
large number of computers and operating systems. WordPerfect uses the file extension .wpd.
The program is (was) recognized for three major characteristics: Streaming code architecture,
Reveal code feature and a user-friendly macro/scripting language called PerfectScript

The streaming code architecture parallels the formatting features of HTML and
cascading style sheets. The documents are created in the same way as HTML pages are written.
The text is interspersed by codes that handle data until a closing tag is encountered. Tags can
be nested, and a few data structures within the stream are also treated as objects. The data
and formatting codes of a WordPerfect document appear as a single continuous stream. The
reveal-code editing screen can be toggled open and closed at the bottom of the main editing
screen. Texts are presented interspersed with codes, while objects are represented by named
tokens. WordPerfect with DOS was well known for its "Alt" keystroke facility, which was
expanded by adding macro libraries. This allowed any sequence of keystrokes to be recorded,
edited and saved. The macros were capable of making decisions, examining system data,
chaining and operating recursively until a stop condition was encountered. WordPerfect is
equipped with built-in accessibility features that let you customize your workspace and perform
tasks more efficiently. These features include changing the magnification level of the document,
creating custom toolbars, assigning keyboard shortcuts, and using QuickWords™.

Spreadsheet

In comparison to word processors, spreadsheet software provides a distinct advantage

when working with numbers. Calculation and functionalities are easier to represent in
spreadsheets than in word processors, and thus effective data handling is possible. Spreadsheet
software also provides flexible presentation of data. This software is capable of interacting with
databases, can populate fields and can also help in automation of data creation and
modification. Spreadsheet software can be shared both online and offline and allows for easy
collaboration. They can also have multiple interacting sheets with data represented in text,
numeric or in graphic form. With these capabilities, spreadsheet software has replaced many
paper-based systems, especially in the business world. Originally developed as an aid for
accounting and bookkeeping tasks, spreadsheets are now widely used in other contexts where
tabular lists can be used, modified and collaborated. Spreadsheet software is also known as a
spreadsheet program or spreadsheet application.
Example:

1. Google Sheet

Figure 1.3

Google Sheets is a free, web-based spreadsheet application that is provided by Google

within the Google Drive service. The application is also available as a desktop application on
ChromeOS, and as a mobile app on Android, Windows, iOS, and BlackBerry. The Google Drive
service also hosts other Google products such as Google Docs, Slides, and Forms. Google sheet
support cells formula typically found in most desktop spreadsheet package. Functions can be
used to create that manipulate data and calculate strings and numbers.

Editing, one of the key features of Google Sheets is that it allows collaborative editing of
spreadsheets in real-time. Rather than emailing one document to multiple people, a single
document can be opened and edited by multiple users simultaneously. Users can see every
change made by other collaborators, and all changes are automatically saved to Google servers.

The Explore feature in Google Sheets was first introduced in September 2016, and it
uses machine learning to bring additional functionalities. This feature provides a lot of
information based on the data added to the spreadsheet, and it can auto-update itself
depending on the selected data. Google Sheets supports offline editing, and users can edit the
spreadsheet offline either on desktop or mobile apps. Google Sheets supports multiple
spreadsheet file formats and file types. Users can open, edit, save or export spreadsheets and
document files into Google Sheets. Some of the formats that can be viewed and converted to
Google Sheets include

2. Microsoft Excel

Figure 1.4

Excel includes many common functions that can be used to quickly find
the sum, average, count, maximum value, and minimum value for a range of cells. In order to
use functions correctly, you'll need to understand the different parts of a function and how to
create arguments to calculate values and cell references. Microsoft Excel has the basic
features of all spreadsheets, using a grid of cells arranged in numbered rows and letter-named
columns to organize data manipulations like arithmetic operations. It has a battery of supplied
functions to answer statistical, engineering and financial needs. Find and Replace Command.

documents, impeccable documents in just a few clicks, intuitive and easy to learn spreadsheet
program , unleash your data, collaborate with others, presentations done right, rich content for
outstanding presentations.

Presentation

Presentation software is generally used for creating slideshows that display information.
In computing, a presentation program (also called presentation software) is a software package
used to display information in the form of a slide show. It has three major functions: an editor
that allows text to be inserted and formatted. a method for inserting and manipulating graphic
image.

Example

1. Powerpoint

Figure 1.6

Microsoft PowerPoint is a powerful presentation software developed by Microsoft. It is

a standard component of the company's Microsoft Office suite software, and is bundled
together with Word, Excel and other office productivity tools. The program uses slides to
convey information rich in multimedia. The slides may contain words, images, graphs, or even
movies. They can be organized to flow from one point to the next or to display key information
at the appropriate times. Features of powerpoint has a transition animations that can be added
between slides, which engage the audience and allow them to feel more involved with the
presentation.

2. Google slide

Google slide can create and present professional pitch decks, project presentations,
training modules, and more. With Google Slides, you can build presentations right in your web
browser—no special software is required. Even better, multiple people can work on slides at
the same time, you can see people’s changes as they make them, and every change is
automatically saved.

Google Slides has the basic slide presentation features, ranging from the ability to
format text and add images to the ability to use layouts and themes. It also includes more
advanced presentation tools such as the ability to publish to the web and
great collaboration features.
3. Prezi

Figure 1.8

Prezi is a presentation tool that can be used as an alternative to traditional slide making
programs such as PowerPoint. Instead of slides, Prezi makes use of one large canvas that allows
you to pan and zoom to various parts of the canvas and emphasize the ideas presented there.
Prezi’s purpose to make presenting slideshow easier for everyone without having a hard time
making in powerpoint.

Features of prezi’s are unlimited presentations, zoom and pan on one slide, Group
editing, Shared folders, Remote "hand-over" presenter tool, Present on desktops or
mobile devices, Works on Windows or Mac and Store on computer or cloud, or both.

Multimedia

A multimedia program, multimedia application, or any multimedia software is software that

is capable of playing or recording audio files or playing or recording video files. For example, in
our earlier example of a multimedia thesaurus that plays audio of famous speeches, it is
considered multimedia software. Multimedia is the use of a computer to present and combine
text, graphics, audio, and video with links and tools that let the user navigate, interact, create,
and communicate.
Example

1. Adobe Photoshop

Figure 1.9

exporting the sound clips in windows media audio format. Features of windows movie maker
are title customization tool, credit customization tool, auto movie options, timeline narration,
special effects options, transition overlays, extensive audio track selection.
Database

A database is an organized collection of data, generally stored and accessed

electronically from a computer system. Where databases are more complex they are often
developed using formal design and modeling techniques. The database management
system (DBMS) is the software that interacts with end users, applications, and the database
itself to capture and analyze the data. The DBMS software additionally encompasses the core
facilities provided to administer the database. The sum total of the database, the DBMS and the
associated applications can be referred to as a "database system". Often the term "database" is
also used to loosely refer to any of the DBMS, the database system or an application associated
with the database.

Example

1. MySQL

Figure 2.2
MySQL is a relational database management system based on SQL – Structured Query
Language. The application is used for a wide range of purposes, including data warehousing, e-
commerce, and logging applications. The most common use for mySQL however, is for
the purpose of a web database. MySQL is a freely available open source Relational Database
Management System (RDBMS) that uses Structured Query Language (SQL). SQL is the most
popular language for adding, accessing and managing content in a database. It is most noted for
its quick processing, proven reliability, ease and flexibility of use.

SQL is a special-purpose programming language designed to handle data in a relational

database management system. A database server is a computer program that provides
database services to other programs or computers, as defined by the client-server model. Some
features of MySQL are Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) MySQL is a relational
database management system, Easy to use. MySQL is easy to use, It is secure. MySQL consists
of a solid data security layer that protects sensitive data from intruders, Client/
Server Architecture, Free to download, It is scalable, Speed and High Flexibility.

2. PostgreSQL

Figure 2.3
It is a highly stable database management system, backed by more than 20 years of
community development which has contributed to its high levels of resilience, integrity, and
correctness. PostgreSQL is used as the primary data store or data warehouse for many web,
mobile, geospatial, and analytics applications. postgreSQL is an enterprise-class open source
database management system. It supports both SQL for relational and JSON for non-relational
queries. It is backed by an experienced community of developers who have made tremendous
contribution to make it highly reliable DBMS system

PostgreSQL includes multiple features that are designed to help the developers in

developing the applications, manage our data in the datasets, and managers can keep the data
integrity, and create the Risk-tolerant environments. Whenever the new release comes into the
market, the PostgreSQL Global group of developers will enhance the previous features and
adds some new features based on the user's demand.

3. Microsoft Access

Figure 2.4
Microsoft Access is a database management system from Microsoft that combines the
relational Microsoft Jet Database Engine with a graphical user interface and software-
development tools. It is a member of the Microsoft Office suite of applications, included in the
Professional and higher editions or sold separately. Microsoft Access is an information
management tool that helps you store information for reference, reporting, and analysis.
Microsoft Access helps you analyze large amounts of information, and manage related data
more efficiently than Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet applications.

Some features of Microsoft access are quick and easy to create database system.
Microsoft Access is an excellent tool for creating bespoke systems that have a database at their
heart. It includes various wizards to speed up the process of creating a database application,
and a vast array of readily available functionality. For an expert programmer specializing in MS
Access, we find that development time is approximately half that needed for creating the same
system using a different platform. This is a huge advantage. It translates directly into a cost-
saving for you and it means that turn-around times are usually a matter of a few weeks from
inception through to delivery.

Microsoft Access produces very user-friendly applications through its comprehensive

programming language (VBA). You may find that you can produce a very basic database in
Access yourself. But with a bit of magic from an expert VBA programmer you can turn a
database into a fully-fledged user-friendly application. There are hundreds of examples of how
we have used programming code in our clients' systems to provide a user-friendly interface,
and to automate processes - from buttons to open screens or to jump between them, to
buttons to calculate and submit VAT returns to HMRC; from automatically populating one box
dependent on the user's choice in another, to automatically sending out reminder emails when
a milestone is passed. The end result is always an easy-to-use system that fits around the way
that your business works.
