Turning off Auto-sync Data in Gmail Apps

Apart from enabling efficient running of Gmail apps, syncing enables you to seamlessly shift

between devices using your Gmail account. You don’t have to manually transfer important data

between your devices. Syncing is a very important feature as it can get time consuming having to

add data manually. Gmail apps sync data automatically into data clouds.

However, syncing may get costly and in some cases, not all data may be needed for your

convenience and this is where turning off Auto-sync comes in. It is possible to manage the

syncing of your messages, and other data forms on your Gmail apps.

What sync does

When your phone syncs, Gmail apps refresh their data and subsequently, update notifications are

sent to you. You can also access the synced data on other devices when you log in with your

Gmail account.

Which apps sync

Gmail apps are by default set to sync with your Google Account automatically. Auto-sync can be

turned off and on selectively for each of the Gmail apps. Other apps sync varying on their nature.

Turning off Auto-sync for Gmail apps

1. Open the settings app on your phone.

2. Tap on the Accounts or Users &accounts icon.

3. If multiple accounts exist on your device, tap the one you choose to turn off.

4. Tap on the Account sync feature.

5. Turn off Auto-sync on all apps you intend to stop syncing.

Tip: Turning off auto-sync for an app is not equivalent to removing that app.. It just stops the

app from refreshing your data automatically.

Upon setting up your Android, your contacts and Calendar are set up to automatically sync with

your Gmail account. Follow these steps to turn this off;

1. Find and tap Settings on the home screen.

2. Select "Accounts and Backup". This may appear as "Accounts & Sync",

“Accounts &Cloud” or "Data Synchronization",

3. Go on and tap on the Accounts feature or if it appears, select the Google account

name. It is usually represented with a Google logo.

4. Select "Sync Account" after selecting Google on the accounts list.

5. Tap "Sync Calendar" and "Sync Contacts" to disable the Contact and Calendar

sync with Google.

To maintain mail syncing while turning off sync on everything else, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to "Settings" on your phone -> "General" -> "Accounts" -> "Google" -> tap on

your email address on the top. From here, you can deselect auto-sync on your preferences.

2. Google+ also has its own syncing options. Find the settings icon on your phone -Go on

to "General" -> "Accounts" -> "Google+" -> "Auto backup". In the top, you can choose

"Off" to turn off the backup of pictures and files to Google+.

In some cases, the Gmail app may continue to sync both email and other data regardless of your

option to disable auto-sync. In this case, go to the Gmail app (do not click on settings and

accounts), click the settings icon inside the Gmail app and click on ADD ACCOUNT. With this

option, only emails will be synced.

Whether you are using Android Oreo or another version, the following still applies when

managing Auto-sync.

Take this example; if you want to opt out of syncing your docs or calendar on Google, Click on

the Google account you want to modify and open Accounts sync. Finish up with toggling off

every account or app that you don’t want to sync.

Turning off Gmail apps sync on Desktop

To turn off Auto-sync on your desktop, open your Chrome browser, and click on the top right

corner. Navigate to settings and the “Turn off Auto-sync” button will be right at the top.

Google Chrome also features an option to manage sync;

 Navigate to sync and select the “Sync and Google services” menu.

 Select the “Manage sync” button.

 If you are choosing to enable or disable certain functions, make sure you turn off

the “sync everything” button.

Gmail apps sync is a useful feature as it can save you a lot of valuable time. But the simple fact

that this feature is available doesn’t mean that you are under coercion to use it. Choose your

convenience. Will you turn Auto-sync on or off?
