STATEMENT
Course Description
This course introduces the students to the process of estimating the value of particular literary works or bodies of literary works on the grounds of personal/or cultural significance of the themes,
use of language of a text, insights and impacts of a text, and the aesthetic production (or, performance) of the text using various critical theories and their influences in the different literary
genres. Also, said course allows the students to express their guided and informed interpretations based on various theoretical approaches of reading from the formalist to the contemporary
approaches.
Course Objectives At the end of the course, students should be able to:
Knowledge
1. Identify the attributes of the VMGOQ that relate to the nature of the course under study.
2. Define the critical focus and thinking of major critics from its formalist beginnings o the contemporary approaches.
Skills
1. Describe the continuities or contrasts in the critical thinking of critics on a specific issue ( i.e. creative process, the nature of art, the function of literature in society, the approaches to
criticism, the relative literary achievement of classical, modern and contemporary periods.)
2. Write a literary analysis paper.
Values
1. Appreciate the use of various literary critical lens in generating interpretation, evaluation and assessment of various literary works.
2. Show importance to the contribution of various critical lens in understanding cross-cultural perspectives for a holistic universal world view.

GRADING PLAN
Grades are computed using the following formula:
Grade= raw score /total no. of items x 50 + 50
1. Attendance:
a. Students who are absent for more than 20% of the total number of class hours (54 in a 3unit course) may be dropped from the course/subject.
b. Any student who finds it necessary to be absent from class must present a letter of excuse to his/her instructor/professor.
c. If student's absences reach Ten(10) times, the instructor/professor may recommend to the Dean that the said student be dropped from the course or be given a grade of 5.0.
3. Wearing of the prescribed uniform and ID and observing proper decorum are required.
4. It is expected that all work submitted will be yours alone, unless you are explicitly permitted to work with others on that specific assignment. Be aware that plagiarism in this course would include not only
using another’s words, but another’s specific mathematical or logical calculations. Assignments must be done independently and without reference to another student’s work. Any outside sources used in
completing an assignment, including internet references, must be fully cited on any homework assignment or exercise.
