Practical Research 2, Q1, WEEK 3

This document provides information about quantitative research and variables. It discusses the importance of quantitative research across different fields like education, healthcare, technology, and census data collection. It also defines independent and dependent variables. Independent variables cause changes in a phenomenon, while dependent variables are the effects or outcomes that change based on the independent variable. Examples are provided like a study of how study habits (independent variable) affect student performance (dependent variable). The document emphasizes correctly identifying independent and dependent variables is important for research design and analysis.

Subject: PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2

Topic: Importance of quantitative research across fields and kinds

of variables and their uses
Prepared by: Fritzie E. Singson Grade: 12
Quarter: First Week: 3

Activity no. 1
 Label the following statements with the words provided inside the box.
Underline the word/s in the statement that gives you a clue of your answer.

EXAMPLE:
 Quantitative research has many applications in the clinical trials, it include
physical measurements. Rather than physically counting each sample, the data
collection process is automated using a computer. No. 3 –Medical Field

 NSO conducted census to determine the number of residents in the entire

Philippines. Through quantitative research, they could easily generate a more
detailed profile of the Filipino people. _________________

 To determine if students’ academic performance ratings maybe a good indicator

as to which of the subjects/courses is most liked or disliked, an Educational
Institution conducted a quantitative study. ______________________

 To prove which among the different internet providers in the Philippines has the
fastest and most reliable internet connectivity, NTC conducted a comparative
study. _____________________

 To determine customer satisfaction or dissatisfaction, quantitative research

approach is used. _____________________

1. Education

2. Information Technology

3. Medical Field

4. Household Census

5. Market Research

Activity no. 2

 Answer the question below in three to five sentences.

1. Are the words above have something to do with research? In what way?

1
TWO MAJOR KINDS OF VARIABLES AND THEIR USES

 A VARIABLE is an object, event, idea, feeling, time period, or any other type of
category which can be measured (Kalof,Dan, & Dieyz, 2008)

 INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
 This causes changes in a phenomenon or situation.
 Probable cause of an event.

 DEPENDENT VARIABLE
 It changes when the independent variable varies.
 These are effects brought by the independent variables.
the outcome of the study.

 EXAMPLE

“FACTORS AFFECTING FILIPINOS’ ATTITUDE TOWARDS HEALTH FOOD”

o The possible factors that affect the attitude are the independent
variables
o These possible factors may be gender, age, economic status and
others.
o This is the subject of the study. This is the one that is being
affected by the changes of independent variables.

 Two major kinds of variables and their uses

(EXAMPLES with EXPLANATION)

 A study on the relation between study habits and performance

of grade 10 students

Study habit is the independent variable. Performance of the grade

10 students is the dependent variable.
The performance of the students (dependent) is depending on the
study habits (independent) of the students.

 A study on whether the choice of type of foot wear differs

between genders.

In the second example, gender is the independent variable. Choice

of type of foot wear is the dependent variable. The choice of foot
wear (dependent) depends on the gender of a person
(independent). Male has its own choice of foot wear and female as
well. Once the gender (independent) changes, the choice of foot
wear (dependent) changes as well.

2
Activity no. 3

Group the words inside the box.

Decide if the word belongs to dependent or independent variable.

EFFECTS RESULTS AFFECT OUTCOMES

CAUSE OUTPUT RESPONSE

OUTCOMES INFLUENCE STAND ALONE

CHANGE BY VARIABLE NOT CHANGED BY OTHER VARIABLE

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE DEPENDENT VARIABLE

3
SIMPLIFICATION

FINISH
Time Finished:

10 minutes
1 KM
BOOTS

FINISH
Time Finished:

7 minutes

1 KM
RUNNING SHOES

 In this illustration, there are two men running, one with boots and another man
with running shoes.

 The shoes are the independent variable and the time is the dependent variable.

 The time finished is affected by the shoes used by the running man. Since, the
second person uses running shoes, he arrived earlier than the first man wearing
boots.

PERFORMANCE TASK - TO-DO-LIST

 Illustrate a scenario/situation/phenomenon that would show independent and

dependent variable.

4
ASSESSMENT:

 Draw something that would illustrate your understanding of dependent and

independent variables and explain it briefly.

ASSIGNMENT:

Draft a rationale or an introduction of the research title that you

made.
