Food Insecurity in The Philippines in The Middle of Pandemic

The document discusses food insecurity in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. It notes that 59 million Filipinos do not have reliable access to basic goods according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. The pandemic has further exacerbated this issue by disrupting food production and supply chains. Farmers and fishermen face difficulties harvesting and working due to quarantine guidelines, potentially leading to food shortages. While the government is allowing food companies to increase operations to meet demand, continuing economic recovery in a safe manner remains a challenge to ensure all Filipinos can afford necessary goods and maintain healthy lifestyles during this crisis.

Food Insecurity in the Philippines in The Middle of Pandemic

The Food and Agriculture Organization issued that 59 million Filipinos consider food insecure or
have not enough access to afford any basic goods available. It was disappointing that the Philippines has
the highest count of citizens that cannot access of any goods they need. Many Filipinos cannot afford
the goods that they need (meat, poultry, fruits, vegetables, etc.) due to the several natural calamities
encountered every year up until now of the time of COVID-19 pandemic. Philippines is heavily relied on
the agriculture, but farmers cannot harvest any healthy goods on the cultivated lands which is the
source of the natural goods because they might get infected by the COVID-19. This will affect many
Filipinos that there will be a food shortage because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this challenging times, sources of goods are running low due to the working efficiency of all food
companies that affect the production rate and the targeted demand. Even the farmers and fishermen
are affected because of the quarantine guidelines. If the farmers and fishermen are still not allow to
continue their harvest to provide goods, food shortage will become an effect to this natural disaster and
it will affect many Filipinos cannot afford any goods especially the low class individuals including the
undernourished were their source of income is scarce to afford any natural goods. Now the government
allowed food companies to increase their work capacity to cope up the demand and supply chain.
Fishermen and farmers too can continue to work to harvest the natural goods that the Filipinos needed
to ensure a healthy lifestyle for their families and relatives.

For me as an engineering student, seeing the economy of the Philippines is slowly rising but it will be a
risk for them to go on operations again providing goods and services to all Filipinos who cannot afford
any of the needed goods. This will be considered as a big challenge of all Filipinos to face the COVID-19
pandemic. It may not be acceptable that the number of individuals who considered as food insecure is
rising, but it can help with that situation if the government provide a solution to donate goods to them
during the pandemic. Even the economy is slowly rising, Filipinos must also make plans to provide goods
and services to maintain a healthy lifestyle for everyone.
