1. The document is an exam for a Control Systems course, consisting of 5 units and 7 total questions. Students must answer 5 full questions, selecting one from each unit. 2. The questions cover various control systems topics - converting between block diagrams and signal flow graphs, determining transfer functions, stability analysis techniques including root locus, Bode plots, Nyquist criterion and more. 3. Students are asked to apply their knowledge of these analysis methods and techniques to example systems represented by diagrams, transfer functions, and polynomials in order to assess stability, determine parameter values, sketch plots, and more.

Instructions: Answer FIVE FULL questions, choosing one from each unit.

UNIT -1
1. a) Applying the knowledge of block diagram Techniques, Determine the overall
transfer function of the block diagram shown in Fig 1.1 08

b) Convert the block diagram shown in Fig 1.1 into a signal flow graph and determine its 08
overall transfer function using Masons gain formulae.

c) Differentiate the source node, sink node and a mixed node used in a signal flow graph. 04
Also define the forward path

Applying the knowledge of signal flow graphs convert the physical diagram into a
signal flow graph and find the overall transfer function. 12

b) Determine the overall transfer function of the system shown in fig 2.2 using block 08
diagram reduction technique.

c) A closed loop system has two complex poles at S1, S2 = - 2 ± j1. Determine the form
of transfer function and values of ωn. Tp. Tr, Ts and Mp 10

UNIT-3
4. a) Discuss the stability of a control system with response curve when the roots of the
characteristic equation are located on i) negative real axis ii) imaginary axis and 08
iii) positive real axis on s – plane.
b) The polynomial P(S) = S4+2S3+3S2+S+1 has all its roots on the LHS of s-plane.Using
R H criterion determine the roots of P(S) lying between s = -1/2 and s = -1. 12
