THEME: “Receive the Holy

Spirit…” John 20: 22

Most Reverend Jose Araneta Cabantan, D.D

Main Celebrant
Procession (Candidates of Confirmation, servers,
readers, assisting priests, and the presiding

INTRODUCTORY RITE

Good morning brothers and sisters in Christ! Welcome to

our Eucharistic Celebration.

In a very special way, we will witness the students of

San Isidro College together with the other parishioners
who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. By the
sacrament of Confirmation, the faithful are more perfectly
bound to the Church and are endowed with the special
strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence, they are true witnesses
to Christ, more strictly obliged to spread the faith by
words and deeds. In a special way today, let us ask the
help and guidance of the Holy Spirit to make us worthy to
receive His power and to become His courageous
witnesses with the loving and maternal intercession of
our Blessed Mother Mary.
With our Mass Presider this morning the Most
Reverend Jose Araneta Cabantan, D.D. the Bishop of the
Diocese of Malaybalay together with_______________.
Joining with our Candidates of Confirmation in this
wonderful and significant moment in their lives let us all
welcome God, as we joyfully sing our entrance hymn.

Entrance Hymn: (Sung)

Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the
sacred mysteries.
(Brief Period of Silence)
All: I confess to Almighty God and to you, my
brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in
my thoughts and in my words, in what I have
done and in what I have failed to do, through my
fault, through my fault, through my most grievous
fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all
the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and
sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Bishop: May Almighty God have mercy on us,

forgive us our sins, and bring us to
everlasting life.

All: Amen.

KYRIE: (Sung)

GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST: (Sung)

Collect

Bishop: Let us pray (brief silence)

Grant, we pray, Almighty God, that the
splendour of Your glory may shine forth
upon us and that, by the bright rays of the
Holy Spirit, the light of Your light may
confirm the hearts of those born again by
your grace. Through our Lord Jesus
Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns
with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God forever and ever.

All: Amen.

Commentator: Please be seated for the Liturgy of the

Word.
LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading: (Isaiah 61:1-3. 6. 8-9)

A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah
The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the
Lord has anointed me; He has sent me to bring glad
tidings to the lowly, to heal the broken hearted, To
proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the
prisoners, To announce a year of favour from the
Lord and a day of vindication by our God, to comfort
all who mourn in Zion a diadem instead of ashes. To
give them oil of gladness in place of mourning, a
glorious mantle instead of a listless spirit. You
yourselves shall be named priests of the Lord,
ministers of our God you shall be called. I will give
them their recompense faithfully, a lasting covenant I
will make with them. Their descendants shall be
renowned among the nations, and their offspring
among the peoples; all who see them shall
acknowledge them as a race the Lord has blessed.
The word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm

Psalmists: Come Lord Jesus; send us Your Spirit, renew

the face of the earth. Come Lord Jesus; send us Your
Spirit, renew the face of the earth.

Come to us, Spirit of God, breathe in us now, we sing

together; Spirit of hope and of light, fill our lives. Come to
us Spirit of God! (Response)

Fill us with the fire of Your love, burn in us now, bring us

together; Come to us, dwell in us, change our lives, O
Lord. Come to us Spirit of God! (Response)

Send us the wings of new birth; fill all the earth with the
love. You have taught us; Let all creation now be shaken
with love. (Response)
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12: 3 – 13
A reading from the first letter of Paul to the
Corinthians.
Therefore, I tell you that nobody speaking by the
Spirit of God says’ “Jesus be accursed.” and no one
can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
There are different kinds of Spiritual gifts but the
same Spirit; there are different forms of service but
the same God who produces all of them in everyone.
To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is
given for some benefit. To one is given through the
Spirit the expression of Wisdom; to another the
expression of knowledge according to the same
Spirit; to another gift of healing by the one Spirit; to
another mighty deed; to another prophecy; to another
discernment of Spirits; to another variety of tongues;
to another interpretation of tongues. But one and the
same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them
individually to each person as He wishes. As the
body is one though it has many parts, and all the
parts of the body, though many, are one body, so
also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into
one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free
persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.
The Word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION AND PROCLAMATION
Commentator: Please all stand to honor the Gospel!

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: (Sung)

Bishop: The Lord be with you.

All: And with your Spirit.

Gospel Reading: (John 20:19-23)

Bishop: A Reading from the Holy Gospel
according to John.

All: Glory to You, O Lord.

On the evening of that first day of the week, even

though the disciples had locked the doors of the
place where they were for fear of the Jews, Jesus
came and stood before them. “Peace be with you,”
he said. When he had said this, he showed them his
hands and his side. At the sight of the Lord the
disciples rejoiced. “Peace be with you,” he said
again. “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
Then he breathed on them and said: “Receive the
Holy Spirit. If you forgive men’s sins, they are
forgiven them: if you hold them bound, they are held
bound.”

Bishop: The Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to you, O Lord Jesus Christ.

Bishop: My brothers and sisters, faithful to the

command of the Lord, who calls us to
love all people, let us be united in prayer
with Jesus our Lord, and say to Him:

All: LORD, LET YOUR LOVE SHINE IN US.

1.For the Church, together with Francis our Pope,

Jose Araneta Cabantan, D.D. our Bishop, and all
the Bishops and priests, that being gathered
together by the Holy Spirit, she may continue to
grow until the coming of Christ, let us pray to the
Lord.

2.For all our government officials that the Holy Spirit

may continue to inspired and direct them to do
what is right and just for the good of the Filipino
people, especially the poorest of the poor. Let us
pray to the Lord.

3.For those, who, by the gift of the Holy Spirit have

received the sacrament of Confirmation especially
the Grade 9 students of San Isidro College, that
being rooted in faith and grounded in love, they
may be witnesses of Christ in their daily life. Let us
pray to the Lord.
4.For our parents and godparents who took upon
themselves the responsibility for their life as
Christians, that they may lead these young men
and women to Christ by their own good example.
Let us pray to the Lord.

5.That the sick and those suffering from lingering

illnesses may find inner peace in the assuring
words of Christ. Let us pray to the Lord.

6.For all of us who are gathered here around the

banquet of our Lord Jesus Christ, that we may give
witness to Christ by our lives built on faith and love.
Let us pray to the Lord.

Bishop: O God, you gave the Holy Spirit to your

Apostles that through them and their
successors the same Spirit be given to the
rest of the faithful. Graciously hear our
prayer and pour out into our hearts today
the same graces, which you granted when
the Gospel was first proclaimed. This we
ask of you through Christ our Lord.

you thanks, Father most holy, through
your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, your
Word through whom you made all things,
whom you sent as our Saviour and
Redeemer, incarnate by the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin.
Fulfilling your will and gaining for you a
holy people, he stretched out his hands
as he endured his Passion, so as to break
the bonds of death and manifest the
resurrection.

And so, with the Angels and all the Saints

we declare your glory, as with one voice
we acclaim:

Sanctus: (Sung)

Commentator: Please all kneel.

The Eucharistic Prayer II

Bishop: Lord, you are indeed Holy, O Lord, the

fount of all holiness. Make holy therefore,
these gifts, we pray, by sending down your
Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they
may become for us the body Body + and
Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
At the time he was betrayed and entered
willingly into his Passion, he took bread and,
giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his
disciples, saying: Take THIS ALL OF YOU,
AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

In similar way, when supper was ended,

he took the chalice and, once more giving
thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying:
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM
IT: THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE
BLOOD OF THE NEW AND EVERLASTING
COVENANT, FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF
SINS. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

Bishop: The mystery of faith.

Memorial Acclamation: (Sung)

Bishop: Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial
of his Death and Resurrection, we offer
you, Lord, the Bread of life and the
Chalice of salvation, giving thanks that
you have held us worthy to be in your
presence and minister to you.

Humbly we pray that, partaking of the

Body and Blood of Christ, we may be
gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.

Remember, Lord, your Church, spread

throughout the world, and bring her to the
fullness of charity, together with Francis
our Pope and Jose Araneta Cabantan,
D.D. our Bishop and all the clergy.

Remember also our brothers and sisters

who have fallen asleep in the hope of the
resurrection, and all who have died in
your mercy;
Welcome them into the light of your face.
Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with
the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
with the blessed Apostles, and all the
Saints who have pleased you throughout
the ages, we may merit to be coheirs to
eternal life, and may praise and glorify
you through your Son Jesus Christ.

Through Him, and with Him, and in Him, O

God, almighty Father, in the unity of the
Holy Spirit, all glory and honour is yours,
forever and ever.

of charity. We ask this through Christ our
Lord.

Recessional Hymn: (Sung)

The Sacrament of Confirmation

"Now when the apostles, who were in Jerusalem,

had heard that Samaria had received the word of
God, they sent unto them Peter and John.  Who,
when they were come, prayed for them, that they
might receive the Holy Spirit.  For he was not as
yet come upon any of them; but they were only
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  Then
they laid their hands upon them, and they
received the Holy Spirit."  (Acts 8:14-17)
1.What is Confirmation?
Confirmation is the Sacrament which gives you
the strength to be a good Catholic.
This Sacrament completes and perfects the
Christian life you begin at Baptism.
2.Who comes into your soul when you are
confirmed?
The Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Holy
Trinity.
"Or know you not, that your members are the
temple of the Holy Spirit?"
  (I Corinthians 6:19)
3.What does Confirmation do to your soul?
i. Confirmation gives you more Sanctifying
Grace...
ii. It gives you more strength to stay away from
sin and lead a Christian life...
iii. It helps you to be a loyal and faithful follower
of Jesus Christ...
iv. It gives you the strength to profess your
Catholic Faith openly and not to hide it.
4.Who gives Confirmation?
   Usually a bishop.
5.What do you have to do to receive Confirmation
worthily?
i. You have to be a baptized Catholic, and...
ii. have no mortal sin on your soul.
You should also be well instructed in the Catholic
religion.
6.Do you have to have a sponsor for Confirmation?
Yes, you have to have a sponsor or godparent.
7.How many times can you be confirmed?
Only once.
8.What is expected of a confirmed Catholic?
A confirmed Catholic, by his prayers and words
and good example, should try to lead others to be
a true Christian.
9.How is Confirmation given?
In the traditional rite, the Bishop, holding his
hands over those to be confirmed, prays for them
and then makes the Sign of the Cross on the
forehead of each one with the holy oil of Chrism.
He then taps each person lightly on the cheek.
10. What words does the Bishop say while
confirming?
He says:  "I sign thee with the Sign of the Cross,
and I confirm thee with the Chrism of salvation, in
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit." or
“ ________ Be sealed with the gifts of the Holy
Spirit”
11. What is Holy Chrism?
A mixture of olive oil and balm, consecrated by
the Bishop on Holy Thursday; it is a symbol of
the strength received in Confirmation.
12. Why does the Bishop tap each one on the
cheek?
The tap on the cheek is to remind those
confirmed that they must be ready to suffer all
things, even death, for the sake of Jesus Christ.
"Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and
persecute you, and speak all that is evil against
you, untruly, for my sake."    (Matthew 5:11)

PRACTICAL POINTS
1.Choose a good Catholic for your sponsor.  You
also have to select the name of another Saint for
Confirmation (not the one you had for Baptism).
2.The Holy Spirit comes into your soul more fully
when you are confirmed.  He brings to your soul
His Seven Gifts, which are:  Wisdom,
Understanding, Knowledge, Counsel, Fortitude,
Piety and Fear of the Lord.
3.A dying parishioner may receive Confirmation
from his pastor if the Bishop cannot be reached
in time.
The Confirmation is a continuation and “completion
of baptismal grace,” according to the Catechism.
While baptism can be performed by a priest,
confirmation is performed by a bishop. The anointing
with oil not only symbolizes a cleansing and healing
but serves as a “seal of the Holy Spirit.”
While the confirmed receive many benefits as a result
– uniting us with Christ more fully, bonding us with
the Church – it gives us a special power. According
to St. Thomas Aquinas as quoted in the Catechism
“the confirmed person received the power to profess
faith in Christ publicly and, as it were, officially.”
Being confirmed is a serious step within the Church.
As such, I spoke with one young woman who was
confirmed recently regarding her feelings both before
and after she received this sacrament.
“I didn’t think it would make much difference to me. I
didn’t think I would feel much spiritually different,”
said Monique Wilkins. So what about her feelings
afterward? “I felt really happy…I realized it’s a big
part of me and a big part of my life,” she said. “I
didn’t think I would be as touched by the Spirit as I
was kneeling there…I’m glad.”
