Lesson 4 - Climate Graphs

Climate graphs show the average monthly temperature and precipitation for a location on one chart. They have temperature plotted on a line graph on the left vertical axis and precipitation as bars on the right vertical axis. Creating a climate graph involves labeling the title, axes, and scales correctly and plotting the temperature and precipitation data points for each month. Climate graphs can then be analyzed to determine statistics like average annual temperature, temperature range, length of the growing season, total precipitation, and whether the climate is continental or maritime.

CLIMATE GRAPHS
WHAT IS A CLIMATE GRAPH?
Climate graphs show average rainfall and temperatures typically experienced in a particular location.
The temperature is shown on a line graph, and rainfall on a bar graph.

ELEMENT FEATURES

Title •Your title should be at the top of the page-centered

•It will be the name of the location in which the climate data is from

Calendar The x axis of the climate graph

Temperature The y axis of the climate graph

Precipitation Precipitation is measured using the numbers on the right hand side of the chart. The
average rainfall for each month is plotted on the graph with a blue bar.

Growing Season Count the number of months with an average temperature

above 5.6° C (mark as 6° C on the graph).

DESIGNING A CLIMATE GRAPH

•TITLE
•Your title should be at the top of the page-centered
•It will be the name of the location in which the climate data is from

•DRAW YOUR AXIS

•You will need a X axis (horizontal line)
•You will need 2 Y axis (vertical line- one on the right then one on the left)

•LABEL THE X AXIS (Calendar)

•Has to be divided by 12 units (there are 12 months in year)
•Each unit should be labeled with the letter the month begins with
•Make sure to label your X-axis “Months”

•LABEL YOUR Y AXIS- THE LEFT (Temperature)

•Look at your climate data in order to determine the degree it should increase
•Make sure your numbers are increasing by an equal number
•Make sure to label your left Y-axis as Temperature (°C) or use a legend

•LABEL YOUR X AXIS-THE RIGHT (Precipitation)

•Look at your climate data in order to determine the milometer it should increase
•Make sure your numbers are increasing by an equal number
•Make sure to label your right Y-axis as Precipitation (mm) or use a legend

•PLOT YOUR DATA

•Plot temperature using a red dotted line graph (measure on the left)
•Plot precipitation using a blue bar graph (measure on the right)
•Plot growing season at 6°C with a straight green line & shade in green from this line to the
temperature line

INTERPRETING CLIMATE GRAPHS

ANALYSIS FORMULA

Average Annual Add together monthly temperature & divide by 12

Temperature

Temperature Range Highest temperature - lower temperature

Continental or Maritime If the temperature range is less than 25°C → maritime

Temperature If the temperature range is more that 25°C → continental

Growing Season Number of months where average temperature is over 6°C

Total Precipitation Add together monthly precipitation

Continental or Maritime If the total precipitation is under 1000 mm → continental

Precipitation If the total precipitation is over 1000 mm→ maritime

Continental or Maritime Continental = temperature range over 25°C & precipitation under
Climate 1000mm
Maritime=temperature range under 25°C & precipitation over 1000mm
Moderate=temperature range over 25°C & precipitation over 1000mm
OR
=temperature range under 25°C & precipitation under 1000mm

PRACTICING CLIMATE CREATION & INTERPRETATION

Create a climate graph for each set of data below. Be sure that ALL the elements are required are present
and that you follow the instructions on the previous page. Ensure to decided the interval of temperature
& precipitation before you begin.
