My first exposure to the study of Computer Science came at the age of twenty.

While taking many college courses related to the

discipline, I came across numerous fascinating subfields, which made me wonder what area I should focus on. Simply put, with so
many subfields out there, it only made more sense to start thinking about narrowing down my scope of interest if I were to gain a
thorough understanding of whatever area I was going to pursue. In this regard, the recent introduction to the topic of deep learning
as well as my participation in Naver AI Hackathon and what I’ve learned from it gave me a conviction that the field of artificial
intelligence is worth exploring for my future career. Therefore, Deep Learning Camp Jeju 2018 can be a great turning point in the
pursuit of my career in that I can not only deepen my understanding of the field but also build social networks with like-minded
students who share common interests in the study of AI. If I am offered a chance to be part of this constructive camp for the
future, I will do myest to make the most out of this experience that will, no doubt, be a crucial stepping stone for my career.

It was not until my 4th year at college that for the first time I learned about natural language processing
(NLP) in one of my courses titled “Information Retrieval.” What caught my attention was that although deep
learning had come a long way in its development, when it came to the accuracy of natural language
processing, the accuracy was rather low around 70%, making me wonder why and how it could be
improved. Also, while studying deep learning, I came across an algorithm called “GAN” whose capability of
generating data on its own was worth noting. Thus, through this camp, I am hoping to test some of my
theories by combining NLP and the algorithm “GAN” to produce some meaningful results in natural
language processing. Not only that, there is one particular project I have always wanted to try using the
knowledge I have acquired so far in the field, which is the application of AI in drawing up a mind map.
These days, with numerous applications of AI in our everyday items, AI speakers are rapidly becoming
popular with their potential to be combined with IOT. However, what I have in mind is that AI speakers can
go beyond allowing users to simply control devices if they can somehow collect and categorize words from
people’s conversations and draw up a mind map. Such a function can have infinite applications like in
meetings or conference calls, as they can easily do the tedious job of a scribe or a secretary but with greater
accuracy and convenience. If granted an opportunity to be part of the camp, I would love to work on either
of my dream projects and see if they are as viable as I imagine.
