Tutorial 1

This document provides 10 practice problems related to principles of analogue telecommunications. It covers topics like amplitude modulation, modulation index, power calculations, bandwidth, and quadrature amplitude modulation. Example questions calculate the peak voltage of an AM carrier signal, total power transmitted at 100% modulation, efficiency of AM transmission, frequencies present in modulated waves, and the effect of phase error on demodulated QAM signals. The problems provide worked examples and questions to test understanding of key concepts in analog signal modulation and transmission.

Tutorial 1 : Amplitude Modulation 2018/2019

1. An AM system transmits 5 kW carrier power. If the transmitter is connected to a 50 Ohm load;

a) Find the peak voltage of the carrier signal when there is no modulation.
b) If the transmitter is then 100% modulated by a 1 kHz signal, what will be the total average
power transmitted?

2. The efficiency of an ordinary AM is defined as the percentage of the total power carried by the
sidebands
Ps
 100 %
P
a) Show that this efficiency can be represented using modulation index  by

2

2 2
b) Show that for a Single tone (Sinusoidal modulating signal) AM,
max  33.3%, when  1

3. Verify that the modulating signal can be recovered from a modulated DSB signal by first multiplying
it by a local sinusoidal carrier and then passing the resultant signal through a low pass filter of the
same frequency as that of the modulating signal.

4. An amplitude modulated wave has modulation index 0.9. If the power carried by the carrier component
in the modulated wave is Pc , what is the total power carried by the upper and lower side bands?
5. A single tone signal is modulating a carrier wave 𝑥𝑐 (𝑡) = 50cos⁡(2(105 )𝜋𝑡). If the modulating signal
is given as 𝑚 (𝑡) = 10cos⁡(2000𝜋𝑡), Find the;

a) Modulation Index
b) The carrier power
c) The power required for transmission

6. An Amplitude Modulated signal is expressed as 𝑠 (𝑡) = 10[1 +

0.8 cos(2000𝜋𝑡] cos(4(105 )𝜋𝑡)) .⁡Find;

a) All the frequencies present in the modulated wave

b) Modulation Index
c) The carrier power
d) Total sideband power
e) Bandwidth of AM wave

7. a) A standard AM broadcasting station is allowed to transmit modulation frequencies up to 5 kHz. If

the AM Station is transmitting on a frequency of 96.5 kHz, find the Maximum upper sideband and
Minimum lower sideband frequencies and the total bandwidth occupied by the AM station.
b) What will happen when another Station decides to transmit modulating frequencies up to 5 kHz on
a frequency of 87.5 kHz? Draw the resulting spectra range of the two stations

8. The percentage of modulation in the AM transmitter is measured to be 90%. If the transmitter has an
antenna with impedance of 40 Ohm and a carrier signal that produces current of 4.8 A, Calculate
a) The carrier power
b) The total power
c) The power in one sideband

9. An AM radio station is using a DSB-SC transmitted carrier system and its carrier of frequency is
1.2MHz. If the modulating signal frequency is 2 kHz, what frequencies are present in in the
modulated signal?

10. Two message signals m1  t  and m2  t  are to be transmitted using a quadrature amplitude modulation

(QAM) system. Assume that the carrier signals generated at the receiver are cos  2 f ct    and

sin  2 f ct    where  is a phase error. Derive the expressions for the demodulated signals and

comment on the effect of the phase error. What will the receiver outputs be if    / 2 ?
