iTech Solutions because IBM i (AS/400’s) didn’t come with
System Administrators.
In this session
We will cover the differences between the Classic GUI and the
now new default, the Enhanced GUI. The presentation of the
GUI and location of functions have changed but the Hardware
Management Console functionality is still the same.

1
Hardware Management Console
• Easy to Manage Power System
• Can Be Used as IBM i Console
• Remote Console Access
• Remote Access of HMC
• Partitions Can Run Without Connection to HMC
• Provides Direct Link to ASMI (Advanced Systems
Management Interface)

2
Overview of IBM i Partitions, FSP, and HMC

3
HMC Versions
• HMC’s earlier than 7310-C04 will not load HMC 7.7 and later.
• POWER8 needs 8.8.1 or higher
• POWER9 needs 9.9.1 or higher
• HMC V9 can manage POWER7, POWER8, and POWER9
• Can’t load 8.8.1 on a CR4 or lower
• Can’t load 9.9.1 on a CR6 or lower (Need CR7 or higher)
• *** 8.8.6 Last to support classic view
• POWER Based HMC Machines (7063-CR1) are future of HMC
