Reaction Paper

The document is a reaction paper about mathematics and patterns in nature. It discusses how mathematics originated from observing patterns in nature, such as snowflake symmetry. It provides examples of how shapes can be represented by coordinate points and numbers. The paper educates the reader about numerology and how the fictional character Sherlock Holmes made deductions similar to mathematical processes. It conveys that patterns exist everywhere in nature and underlie many theories and concepts used today. The writer found the passage inspiring as it helped them better understand mathematics and realize its relevance in daily life.

REACTION PAPER

“We live in a universe of patterns.” At first, I find this irrelevant with our
Mathematics subject but as soon as I continued on reading the series of
paragraphs, I then somehow understand the origin and history of
Mathematics.

According to Merriam Webster, the terminology, “Mathematics” is defined as

the science of numbers, quantities, and shapes and the relationship between
them. And according to some studies, Mathematics is the science of patterns
and relationships. At first, we will probably interpret this as a complex concept
to understand but if we will try to dig deeper and understand it, we will realize
the relationship of nature’s patterns and Mathematics.

Back then, I always wonder how Mathematicians created such concepts and
Mathematical formulas but after reading this, my question was answered and I
have found out as well that nature’s patterns are not just there to feed our eyes
with admiration but they also play the role as vital clues to the rules that
govern natural processes.

With the help of series of examples showed by the passage, I am amazed

because I have realized things that do not matter to me before and I have
understood that patterns are always there around us, we might not be able to
realize it but they actually play an important role in our lives. I am impressed
because I have realized upon reading the passage that nothing is really perfect
even a perfect circle is not actually perfectly created but despite of that, they
follow the same pattern. Just like from the example about the snowflakes
wherein they might not be exactly the same but they always have six-fold
symmetry.

The passage also compared the concept of evidence of Sherlock Holmes who is
a well-known detective fictional character to concept of Mathematics wherein
the underlying rules and regularities were products of pure deductions based
from an observation. This comparison made me understand that we can
actually understand something just by using logic and without any experiment.
Sounds like the concept of philosophy to me because they are discoveries,
products of pure deduction without affecting its nature. Patterns were actually
the only secret behind the superb thinking skills of the fictional character,
Sherlock Holmes and the Mathematicians.

The passage also educated me about the numerology which is the easiest yet
dangerous method of finding patterns which I find amazing because it made
me realized its concept. I am also fascinated by knowing that shapes were
made from coordinates of dots, tiny dots stored and manipulated as a pair of
numbers. The passage does not only introduce that pattern but other types of
patterns as well that we can just see from our surroundings. These nature’s
patterns became the basis of the theories and concepts that we are using up
until now.

As a person who is one of those people who neither does really appreciate nor
likes numbers and analyzing, specifically, Mathematics this passage is really
inspiring to me since that it supplied knowledge for me to deeply understand
the concepts and theories behind Mathematics, hence it also made me realized
that Mathematics is everywhere just like Science which is already existing
naturally in this universe so we should embrace it instead just like how we
embraced the Western and Spanish culture because there is something
meaningful and useful behind that after all so there is nothing for us to loss.
