The City of General Santos is one of the most progressive City in Mindanao.

It has received three


consecutive awards of being “Most Competitive City” in the whole Philippines last 1999-2000, 2000-
2001, and 2001-2002. The award was given by Asian Institute of Management and Department of Trade
and Industry.

Tuna Festival is the biggest fiesta in General Santos City that started in 1998. Fondly called GenSan, the
largest producer of sashimi-grade tuna in the Philippines celebrates all things tuna during the first week
of September with this colorful festival.

The beginning of the festival is marked by an extravagant float parade. The outdoor lover will certainly
fall in love with the floats designed like tuna fish. The design of the floats is inspired by the ocean, and
obviously the tuna fish, which is pretty obvious from their colors and shapes. This is also fun for the
kids, so parents should feel free to travel with the little ones. And bear in mind that this is only the
beginning of the festivities.

It is a week-long celebration, you can expect a lot different culinary events every night. This festival has a
Sashimi Night and Tuna Culinary Skills competition and this two best events are worth attending. You
will get to see some of the best tuna chefs in the region showcase their skills, and try some of the
delicacies that they prepare.

Some of the events you can look forward to during the Tuna Festival include:
Tuna Float Parade. This parade marks the beginning of the Tuna Festival. Locals showcase the
province’s bountiful catch with colorful, ocean-themed floats.

Sugbahan sa Dalan. A long line of grills is set up on the street and hundreds of kilos of tuna are grilled
on the spot. These delicious food is free for everyone.

Dragon Boat Race/Bancarera. Different water sports are some of the highlights during the
celebration. There’s a dragon boat race, a skimboarding competition, a motorized banca race, and a jet
ski challenge.

Parada sa Dagat. No festival is complete without a vibrant street dancing competition.

Other Things to Do :
There are many tourist spots you can visit when in General Santos. Make sure to include these
attractions to your itinerary:

Queen Tuna Park. Relax in one of its beachside cabanas and take in the views of Sarangani Bay.
General Santos Fish Port Complex. This is the second largest fish port in the Philippines next to the
Navotas Fish Port Complex. Watch tons of tuna being loaded and processed right before your eyes.

Mindanao State University Museum. It is home to various traditional household objects and clothing
from the Maguindanao, B’laan, and T’boli tribes of the pre-settlement era.

Tuna Festival is an incredible part of General Santos City. The city’s other moniker is
‘Philippines’ Tuna Capital’, thanks to the abundance of tuna fish.

The yellow fin tuna fish abound in the waters that surround the city, effectively making the city
one of the leading producers of tuna. What’s more, General Santos is recognized as a golden
source of tuna globally.

Tuna Festival is very enjoyable and colorful celebration in General Santos City.
