Question Tag

Question tags are mini questions added to the end of sentences in conversation to express interest or surprise. There are certain verbs like "am", "is", "are", "was", "were", "have", "has", "do", "does", "did", and "can" that are used to form question tags. Typically a positive question tag is used with a negative statement, and vice versa. However, intonation is also important - a rising intonation forms a real question while a falling intonation indicates the speaker wants agreement. Imperative statements can also take question tags like "would you", "shall we", and "can't you" depending on the level of politeness required.

Question Tag

 Question tags ➔ Mini questions which we put on the end of the sentence.
 In conversation , you can say “ have you ? / is it ? / can he ? Etc, to so that you are
interested or surprised.
 You can use these verb :
 am / is /are
 was / were
 Have / has
 Do / does / did
 Can / will

A : Are you late ?


B : Oh am I ? I’m sorry
 Normally we used a positive question tag with a negative sentences.

NEGATIVE SENTENCE + POSITIVE TAG

Tom isn’t late Is he ?


They don’t like Do they ?
They aren’t students Are they ?
I’m not late Am I ?
He isn’t merried Is he ?
You aren’t tired Are you ?
We aren’t sleepy Are we ?
 And normally we use a negative question tag with a positive sentence

POSITIVE SENTENCE + NEGATIVE TAG

Ann will be here soon Won’t she ?


They were very angry Weren’t they ?
She is a nurse Isn’t she ?
He is a doctor Isn’t he ?
We are hungry Aren’t we ?
They come to the party Do they ?
She speaks English Doesn’t she ?

 The meaning of a question tag depends on how we say it .


• If the voice goes down, you aren’t really asking a question , you only asking the other
person to agree with you :
 Tom doesn’t look very well today, does he ?
 She is very atractive. She’s got beautiful eyes hasn’t she ?
• But the voice goes up, it is a real question :
 You haven’t seen Ann today, have you ?
( = Have you seen Ann today)
 with auxiliaries
You've got a car, haven't you?
without auxiliaries (use:don't, doesn't, didn't)
They play football on Sundays, don't they?
She plays football on Sundays, doesn't she?
They played football on Sundays, didn't they?

Imperative statement
 Imperative statement biasanya digunakan untuk meminta dan menyuruh orang lain
untuk mengerjakan sesuatu. Ada juga yang berfungsi untuk melarang dan mengajak
orang lain.
 Tag yang digunakan adalah:
 Will You, Won't You, Would You, Could You, Can You, Dll Yang Sejenis.
Penggunaannya Tergantung Dari Situasi Kalimatnya Dan Tingkat Kesopanan
Statement Yang Disampaikan. Misalnya Kalau Meminta Orang Lain Untuk
Mengerjakan Sesuatu, Lebih Baik Gunakan Would You Atau Sejenisnya, Dan
Menyuruh Seseorang Dengan Nada Marah, Maka Can You Akan Lebih Cocok
Digunakan Daripada Would You.
 Sedangkan Untuk Let's, Tag Yang Digunakan Adalah Shall We?
 Contoh:
 Sit Down, Would You?
 Let's Do It Again, Shall We?
 Don't Disturb Me, Can't You?
 Penggunaan tag di atas sama penggunaanya dan dapat digantikan dengan please.
 Contoh:
 Sit Down, Please?
 Let's Do It Again, Please?
 Don't Disturb Me, Please?

 To agree with the speaker statement ( membenarkan )
A : You are a nurse, aren’t you ?
Yes, am I ( I am a nurse)
B : She doesn’t work in the hospital, does she ?
No, she doesn’t ( She doesn’t work in the hospital)
 To disegree with the speaker statement ( menyangkal )
A : He is a clever, isn’t he ?
No, he isn’t ( He is not clever)
B : They did not come to the class yesterday, did they ?
Yes, they did ( They come to the class yesterday)
