Proposed Title Reading Comprehension and Writing Performance of Education Students in

Selected Schools of Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology

INTRODUCTION

Rationale/Backgroun The nature of reading comprehension and writing performance is vital

d of the Study
to improve students learning outcomes. Reading is not simply about

mechanical skill. It helps us understand our world by enabling us to learn

about our past and plan for our future. It also helps the writing performance of

the student. This study intends to explore the reading comprehension of

education students in connection with their writing performance.

In the global setting, Ozdemir (2009) stressed that reading is

fundamental in getting knowledge as all the lessons and learning activities are

mostly based on the power of comprehensive reading;it is really necessary to

read comprehensively. In his study, among 700 students revealed that 35% of

the students experienced problems across all aspects of the reading process

(i.e. vocabulary, fluency, reading comprehension and reading strategy use).

Yet there is little evidence to suggest that learners at any level will acquire the

reading and writing skills and strategies that can improve their reading if they

have not been taught. In addition, reading comprehensively really affects a

learners writing performance and his life as a whole. Thus, a learner who

cannot read comprehensively finds it difficult for him/her to be successful in

writing an articles or essays.

In Singapore, the school English syllabus requires students to write a

composition. They require all the learners to write in English to be able to be

productive in the students learning about the English language and enhance

their reading comprehension. But there is little guidance on how to do so.

Most of the advice given by adults is generic, like “Read more book” or “Write

more compositions”  that kind of advice is hardly effective. The performance

of the students in writing is interconnected with the comprehension on the

reading materials given to these students towards English language. Different

studies stated that the reason of the poor performance in writing of the

students’ is concerning with the lack of reading comprehension and the

knowledge about how to arrange information and the proper use grammar to

get a well structured form of paragraphs and essays as well, without any

mistakes (Lee,2016).
3
In Local setting, the City Schools of Davao is really been on doing

something about this concern. It intends to improve the performance level of

its learners. It was determined that having a reading program in each school

is essential. The Division Office them through the collaboration of the Basic

Education Assistance for Mindanao (BEAM) project and the University of the

Philippines developed a reading and writing program which empowers

teachers, supervisors and other stakeholders to improve the students

performance. As of the last two years, the implementation of the

aforementioned is in full blast ready. Ultimately, the poor reading and writing

performance of the students will be more clearly highlighted from perceived

issues and identify interventions which can have high potential for success

rates improvement.

Literature Review Reading Performance

Poor reading comprehension are mainly caused by failure to acquire

phonological awareness and the skills in alphabetical coding. Some research

work shows the phonological awareness as a predictor of reading success at

all levels. Researcher surveyed children aged 15-16 years attending schools

in England to establish their degree of involvement in their education. A

survey was used to conduct interview to collect information regarding the

parents help in school, their relationship with their teachers and involvement

with homework. The findings indicated that parental involvement was the

most strongly related to the achievement of their children in the school where

their child is attending while participating the school’s activities. Since reading

can pressure the child’s performance, students need regular and ongoing

support of the parents. The most dramatic benefits of explicit reading

approaches have been demonstrated (Williams et. al., 2002).

5
Bernardez (2008) indicated the four levels of reading

comprehension. Literal level produces knowledge of what the author said. At

this level the learners are expected to identify the basic information and follow

the simple instructions. Interpretative level or reading between the lines is

applied to what the author said in order to derive, infer, and imply meaning

from a statement. The learners are tasked to discern the implications of the

episodes by inference and to conform ideas or meanings indirectly or

implicitly stated in the selection. Critical level refers to reading beyond the

lines the students give reaction, judgment and evaluation of what is written.

Lastly, creative level is the highest level of comprehension, for it requires the

exercise and application of creative talent and some practical and theoretical

exercise. This level develops the readers talent to profit from the vicarious

experiences gained through reading. If the these four levels of comprehension

are not achieve by the learners he/she will have a poor writing performance or

difficulties in school.

Palani (2012) reading is an essential and important aspect for

creating a literate student. It shapes the personality of individuals and it helps

them to develop proper thinking methods, and creates new ideas and

believes reading is the identification of appropriate meaning. Further opined

that, effective reading is important avenue of effective learning and reading is

interrelated with total educational process and hence, educational success

requires successful reading habit. He believes reading is the identification of

the symbols and the association of appropriate meaning with them. It requires

identification and comprehension.

13
Bryce (2011) the students in higher grade level are responsible for

reading and comprehending all of the directions. Students need practice

reading in order to develop their fluency, vocabulary and comprehension as

these will improve their writing performance. The mastery of these skills will

grant them access to increasingly complex knowledge in other academic

subject areas.

Issa et. al. (2012) believes that from middle childhood through

studying is initially acquired through reading. Thus everyday reading activities

in which students engage may, considerably influence their writing

performance and study skills. There is a general sense in which one

appreciates the link between good habits of reading and writing performance

of the students generally. The difficulty in writing typically result from a lack of

reading comprehension of a student that is often expected in relation to other

factor like oral reading anxiety that eventually gives stress to the students and

affects the quality of his writings.

Writing Performance

In Jaramillo and Medina (2011), the written skill is perceived as an art

in which willingness and motivation are important. With regards to writing

skills, Jaramillo and Medina (2011) focused their action research on the

development of writing short descriptive texts in English. In the Philippines,

the results confirmed that most of the difficulties students had were related to

the construction of sentences, grammatical errors and difficulties in reading

comprehension. The researchers understood that learners performed better in

writing tasks when they had comprehend the topic they were focused on. In

addition, investigators suggested that the best way to improve writing skills

was through practice and proper reading comprehension.

Larios et al. (2008) conducted a study in which the foreign language

(English) writer’s strategic allocation of time to writing processes was

analyzed. They conducted the study in Italy where they have 200 respondents

to answer their questions. They found that the process of writing formulation

took up the largest percentage of composition time for participants, and also

that writing processes were deferentially distributed depending on the writer’s

proficiency level.

According to Brookes and Marshall (2004) imagination and originality

are valued more than the standardization of thought and truthfulness while

characterizing creative writing. While assessing the student for creative

writing, they are given space to fabricate the content. The main purpose is

always to evaluate their creative writing and cognitive skills. Being an ability,

writing can be improved by learning through repetition. If the teachers would

be aware of the writing process, this would help in teaching appropriate

strategies and that would also improve the writing abilities of students in

education environment (Oberman and Kapka, 2001).

In the study of Yaakob (2015), entitled Factors Affecting Students’ Writing

Skills in Primary Schools where there are 50 respondents. In India, most of the

students didn’t get higher banned in the writing task because of several reasons.

Students declared that their weakness of writing because of grammatical errors, lack

of knowledge and understanding, less practice of writing in English, and lack of self-

motivations. Some students said that they cannot express their ideas in the context,

while others said they do not know how to write even single sentences. These

problems make the students feel anxiety to write because they are looking for the

marks to gain higher banned. Some student said that sometimes they can write a

sentence without grammatical mistakes, but the problem is how to gather these

sentences in a paragraph form. Other student declared that making mistakes in

grammar is a big issue. But then, there are 6 ways to improve students’ academic

writing skills: encourage good writing and penalize poor writing; work on your student’s

mindset; a lot of practice equals better performance; provide instructions throughout

the writing process provide helpful feedback; and have your students read a lot with

comprehending the topic (Crockett,2016).

METHODS

Research Design: The study adopted a descriptive-correlation research design.

According to Lerner (2006) descriptive-correlation research design enables

the researcher to collect and see the relationship of information about

people’s view, attitude and the variety of education or social issues that affect

them. The design was a experimental in nature and it does require sufficient

investigation. This research design was considered suitable because it

enables the researchers to gather information from the respondents on

reading comprehension and writing performance of education students.

Kothari (2004) states that descriptive-correlation research design allows for

the use of multiple sources of data collection. This design is chosen because

it allows the researchers obtain quantitative data with regard to reading

comprehension and writing performance of the students.

Place of Study: This study will be conducted at District 2, Davao Oriental, Philippines.

District 2 will be selected for the study because there are 3 branches of
