'Teens in Mobile Phone Danger': Is The Radiation From Mobile Phones Dangerous?
A scientist has warned that children who use mobile phones are at risk of suffering memory loss,
sleeping disorders and other health problems.
Dr Gerard Hyland, of the University of Warwick, said children are particularly at risk because
their immune systems are less robust and are still developing.
Fears over the use of mobile phones has centred on "brain heating", but Dr Hyland said the real
risk was with low intensity radiation, known as non-thermal radiation.
Dr Hyland, who is based in the physics department at the University of Warwick, said children
were at risk because their skulls are smaller and thinner and radiation was able to penetrate.
'Radiation is known to effect the brain rhythms and children are particularly vulnerable,' he said.
'The body is an electro-chemical instrument with exquisite sensitivity. The effect of microwaves
from a mobile phone is a bit like interference on a radio. It has an impact on the stability of cells
in the body.
'The main effects are neurological, causing headaches, memory loss and sleeping disorders.'
He added: 'If mobile phones were a type of food, they simply would not be licensed because
there is so much uncertainty surrounding their safety.'
Mobile phones also produce small amounts of heat in the brain, but again, not enough to pose a
health risk. Scientists have put forward other theories, but, so far, none of them have been
conclusively proven, despite a lot of research.
In 2000, the UK signed up to a set of international safety standards, which set a limit on the
amount of radiation given off by phones. These limits have a very large safety margin to protect
people who may be more sensitive to phone radiation, such as children.
There is no doubt that the mobile phones have made the life more easy and
comfortable. Everyone is in touch with their family members, friends and other known. If we want
to talk with anyone, there is no need to write a letter and have to wait for days to send the message to
receiver, just we have to pick the phone and press a number and start talking. Mobile phones are
comfortable way of communication over a long distance. Life becomes so easy and fast by holding the
mobile phones.
Like every coin have two sides, mobiles phones providing a lot of advantages also shows off few
disadvantages. Mobile-phone use while driving is common. It is generally agreed that using a hand-held
mobile phone while driving is a distraction that brings risk of road traffic accidents. So we need to use
hands free sets to avoid such hazards.
A little attention is received recently towards the potential impact of the kind of electromagnetic fields
generated by cellular phones on the human brain. Accumulating evidence indicate that microwave
radiation from mobile phones may cause serious diseases and disturbances in the physiology. This
includes an increased cancer risk and genetic damage, disturbed brain function and other effects.
Mobile phone radiation and health concerns have been raised, especially following the enormous
increase in the use of wireless mobile telephony throughout the world. Hence, the head set should be
kept at reasonable distance from our head and prolonged use of mobile phone should be avoided.
Once you have an understanding of the safety concerns, you can start looking at ways a cell
phone can be used to address those worries. Here are some examples:
To have immediate access to someone to help, you should enter important phone
numbers (parents, support workers, friends) into the address book of your phone. These
numbers can be entered on speed dial so that you will be able to call them by holding
down one button. If you have trouble reading, most phones allow you to add a picture so
you can choose the right number for the person you wish to call.
You should give your phone number to the important people in your life. If they are
worried about you or have to tell you something important right away, they can call you
on your phone.
If you are late meeting someone and they have your phone number, they can call you to
find out where you are. You can also phone them to let them know that you are going to
be late.
If you are lost, you should call one of the important numbers you have put into your
address book. This person can help you find your way home.
911 is also a good number to put into your address book. By calling 911 you will be
connected to the police, ambulance and fire services in your community. Remember that
this number is to be only used in an emergency and when you are in real trouble or hurt.
If you do not know the directions to where you are going, most cell phones now have
GPS (Global Positioning System) program which allows you to find out how to get to the
place. The phone will give directions to where you are going. There often is an option to
have the directions read out with a speech reader.
There are services built into some phones that allow a parent or support person to track
the location of the phone such as “TELUS Kids Find”. If you are an adult, 18 years or
older, the decision to use a service like this should not be taken lightly and should be
based on a mutual agreement between the parent / support worker and yourself. However,
once the decision is made to use a tracking service, it can provide reassurance to both the
adult who is nervous about going out into the community by himself/herself and for the
parent / support worker who is worried about the adult’s safety.
Cell phones today can be more than a safety device. Once you have determined how you want to
use the cell phone for safety, think about other positive uses for your cell phone. Here are a few
examples:
Most phones have calculators built right into the phone so you can determine whether
you are getting the right change back from a purchase. The Money Magic Arcade game
teaches how to make change with Canadian coins and how to use a calculator
Phones can also be a source of entertainment, especially when waiting for an appointment
or when you are on a long car or bus trip. All cell phones have some free games that
come with the phone. There are usually many more that can be purchased and
downloaded for as little as $.99 per game.
All cell phones have a clock to tell the time.
Some phones allow you to download music and movies.
Some phones allow you to check the weather forecast for the city you are in, so you can
make decisions about what to wear or the method of transit that is the safest to get you to
where you need to go.
You can be in touch with your children, and know their whereabouts. (The Pew study
noted that 48 percent of parents use the phone to monitor their child's location.)
Your kids can reach you in the event of an emergency, and vice versa.
If in danger, your children can reach the authorities or a medical provider.
Phones can be silenced during class or study periods, and active only in appropriate
places.
Cell phones create a convenience that was previously unavailable. With cell phones, you
can easily reach your kids for any reason: to ask them questions, change plans, or to
simply say hello.
