Factory Complex Constructor 4.02: Manual

1. Introduction
Building complexes is a difficult task. Several
issues make it rather complicated.
For example, the sector map (although
translucent) is blocking the view while
placing a station.

Even with a high resolution (say 1600 x

1200), the visibility is poor.
The sector map is preventing a direct view,
and this is not the only problem. It is difficult
to rotate a station or align several stations.
Part of the problem is that the movement
is continuous and not in steps.

The fact that it's impossible to move a

station which is already connected to a
complex doesn't really simplify it...

Stations have different sizes and shapes. To

align such different objects often requires
adjustments in position and orientation.
Moreover stations are displayed translucent
during the placement process which makes
it difficult to see the connection points
(nodes).

Hence one does just place them roughly at the desired locations and then connects
them. The result is well-known to X3 players: a bizarre complex with zigzag pipelines ...

The Factory Complex Constructor (FCC) has been developed to enable the construction
of appropriately looking complexes.
Complexes which don't only look beautiful but also help to save performance issues because they do
not occupy an entire sector and NPC ships (with the IQ of a slice of toast) no longer get stuck within
the wired pipe construction.

To enable this, the Factory Complex Constructor offers a wide range of features that can make
station and complex building easier, faster and more precise. Except for one thing: The Factory
Complex Constructor is not able to connect stations – the user still has to do this job in manual
operation. But regardless, the Factory Complex Constructor can help you to make complex building
far more efficient than before.

This manual will guide you trough setup issues and all functions available in this script. Additionally, it
shows valuable information about complex building which are always needed. Have fun!

1.1 About the editions

There are two different editions of the Factory Complex Constructor: Light” and “Plus”. These
editions differ in their range of features. Below, you can see a chart which shows the exact
differences between the two editions.
Note: The Edition is not the same thing as the Version of the script. The latter shows the stage of
development.

→ Why are there two different editions?

In the process of developing the Factory Complex Constructor, more and more features have been
integrated into the script. Many users appreciated these features - but meanwhile, other people
criticised that the script had become overloaded.

Due to this, I decided to make two different edtitions. The "Light" edition which offers only the core
features of the FCC, and the "Plus" edition which offers extended functionality.

Both editions will always have the same version number. This means, if there is an update for the
FCC, both editions will be updated at the same time.

Note: Features of the script which are only available in the Plus- edition are marked with a red P in
this manual.

Additionally, it is possible to change the installed edition. See chapter 8.5 for details.

2. Setup
Before installing this script, Make sure you have installed the latest patch. You can download and
install the most recent patch from http://www.egosoft.com/download/x3/patches_en.php.

Important: Before installing any scripts or mods, always make a backup of your savegames! The files
are located in C:/Users/YourName/Documents/Egosoft/X3 TC/save.

2.1 Installation

First of all, unpack the .zip file into a new folder. In this folder, you will find the folders “scripts” and
“t”. Copy these two into your X3 folder (usually C/Program Files/Deep Silver/X3 Reunion). Windows
will ask if you want to overwrite the existing folders - click yes.

Or, if you have installed Cycrow's Plugin manager, double- click the .spk file in the
“ScriptInstallerFile” folder.

To use this (or any other) script, you have to activate the script editor. For that purpose, change your
pilot's name (not the ships name!) into Thereshallbewings (mind the capital T and the double L) and
press enter (the name will now be resetted automatically to your old setting).
Afterwards, save your game and re-load it. If you have done everything properly, a message will
appear and tell you that the script has been installed successfully.

2.2 Uninstalling the script

Get a system report from the FCC (you have to define a hotkey first). Select “Uninstall the FCC” in the
incoming message.
Now exit X3 and delete the following files:

In scripts: -All files named plugin.fcc.xxxxxxxx

-setup.plugin.fcc

in t: 498845.xml
448845.xml

After removing these files, you have successfully uninstalled the script.

Note: If you start X3 before deleting all files, the FCC will be installed again automatically!

2.3 Hotkey configuration

As a first step after installing the script, you have to configure its hotkeys. You can configure hotkeys
in game by accessing options/controls/interface (scroll down).
You may configure the hotkeys as you wish – As an example, you could use the following settings:

3. Building stations using the FCC

One of the Factory Complex Constructor's main
features is its ability to build stations via the [Build
Station [FCC] ] command, which can be found in
the “general” command menu. The command is
only available on TL- class ships in your
possession.

This command differs from the standard “Place

station” command in the vanilla game. The
following chapter will explain its features and
specialities.

Note: The command is only available on TL- class ships in your possession. Hired TL ships are NOT
supported!

3.1 Building an initial station

When placing a station we distinguish two cases:

1) placing of the first (initial) station and
2) placing additional stations in order to align them with an already placed station.

When building a complex, the first step should always be the placement of an initial station. This will
allow you use it as a reference for further stations.
To build a station using the FCC, select the [Build Station [FCC] ] command, which can be found in the
“general” command menu of any of your TL class ships. This command requires the following
parameters:

1. Station (ware the TL's cargo bay)

2. Sector
3. Position (select a position via the cursor or select an existing station as a reference)
4. Offset X- axis (-1,0,1)
5. Offset Y- axis (-1,0,1)
6. Offset Z- axis (-1,0,1)

First, select a station in your TL's cargo bay. Afterwards, the universe map will appear, where you
have to select the desired sector. Now the sectormap will be shown. Now you can select the desired
position of the station – use the numpad arrows on your keyboard to move the cursor and press
Insert (Ins) to switch between the map's axis.
When you have completed this steps, the FCC will ask for Offset parameters. Because we want to
build an initial station, enter 0 (zero) in all three pop-up windows. You will find further explanations
regarding the offset parameters in the following subsection.

If you entered all required data, the FCC will now build the selected station.
Please note that the TL ship has to be in the sector where you want to place the station.

Factory Complex Constructor 4.02: Manual

3.2 Building additional stations

Once you have placed an initial station, you are ready to build additional stations which can be
aligned with existing ones. To build additional stations, use the same command as when placing the
initial station.
The positioning of additional stations is not defined via the cursor. Instead, an already
placed station is selected from the list in the sector map. You do not have to select the initial station
as your reference point – you can choose any of your stations as a reference.
The alignment of the new station is then done relative to the selected station. The newly placed
station will have the same orientation (rotation) as the reference station.

Placing an additional station requires offset parameters to position the station at a different
location.
Only the values -1, 0, or 1 are accepted as offset parameters. If you enter a
higher/lower number, the value will be corrected automatically.
These values shift the station along the 3 axis.

The distance between the stations is then calculated based

on the radius of the station and on a constant safety distance.
The offset input parameters shift the station about that distance.

Chart: possible offset parameters

X Offset Y Offset Z Offset
1 Increases the distance 1 Increases the distance 1 Increases the distance
along X along Y along Z

0 Keeps X position 0 Keeps X position 0 Keeps X position

-1 Reduces the distance along X -1 Reduces the distance along Y -1 Reduces the distance along Z

Note: You can also enter offset parameters for multiple axis.

Example 1: To place a station to the right of an

existing one, enter the following values:
Reference: Initial Station
X Offset = 1; Y Offset = 0; Z Offset = 0

Example 2: To place another station along

the X-Axis:
Reference: Station 1
X Offset = 1; Y Offset = 0; Z Offset = 0

Example 3: To place a station on top of

Station 2:
Reference: Station 2
X Offset = 0; Y Offset = 1; Z Offset = 0

Color Code:
Green = Reference station
Red = New Station
Gray = Other Stations

3.3 Building stations by entering coordinates

You can also build a station by using the [Build station (coordinates) [FCC] ] command (in the
“general” command menu). This command lets you build a single station by entering exact position
and rotation coordinates. The command requires the following parameters:

1. Station (ware the TL's cargo bay)

2. X-Position (metres)
3. Y-Position (metres)
4. Z-Position (metres)
5. X-Rotation (angular degree)
6. Y-Rotation (angular degree)
7. Z-Rotation (angular degree)

The station will always be placed in the TL's current sector.

3.4 General tips for placing stations

 If you place stations using the FCC, the script will automatically check if there is a collision
between the station and another object. In this case, the building process will be aborted and
you will hear a warning signal.
 All stations can be moved and/or rotated subsequently after they have been placed.
 In general, it is helpful to place station as near to each other as possible. If you use the FCC's
offset parameters, the smallest possible distance will automatically be calculated
 You can build single complex hubs (control centres) by using the FCC. For that purpose, select
a complex construction kit as the desired station.
 Be aware to place the control centre in a position where ships can dock without any
problems. Make sure that no pipes block the docking clamps of the complex hub.
 Placing the complex hub close to the sector centre can increase your freighter's efficiency by
decreasing the distance to the jump gates.
 If you want to build a compact complex, mind the node 1 positions when placing the station.
This will ease the process of exact station alignment.

1 Nodes: See chapter 6

Factory Complex Constructor 4.02: Manual

4. Moving and rotating stations

Any of the player's stations can be moved and or rotated in all three axis by using the FCC Hotkeys.

When moving or rotating a station, the FCC prevents collisions between the station and other object.
If the station collides with something, it will be resetted to the last safe position and you will hear a
warning signal.
Furthermore, it is possible to adjust the steps in which the station is being moved or rotated.

Important: To move and/or rotate a station, you need a tractor beam. The tractor beam has to be
located in the cargo bay of one of your ships. This ship has to be in the same sector as you! The
tractor beam does not have to be installed into a turret.

4.1 Fixing and unfixing objects

Before moving or rotating a station, you have to unfix it.

Basically, there are two hotkeys for fixing/unfixing objects: One is for single stations, the other one is
for whole complexes. For further explanations about moving complexes, see chapter 4.8.

To fix/unfix a single station, select the station as your current target and press the
[Fix/unfix station] hotkey. An unfixed station can be identified by it's name, which is in { } -brackets.
Pressing the hotkey another time will fix the station again.

Furthermore, there is the possibility to move or rotate stations which have already been connected
to a complex. See chapter 4.8 for details.

Note: It is recommended to fix any unfixed stations before connecting them to a complex.

4.2 Moving stations

Each unfixed station can be moved via the [move station ...] hotkeys along all three axis. A built-in
collision detection avoids moving a station into another one and issues a warning message
To speed up the process of station positioning several steps of a movement (press key repeatedly)
can be done successively.

Note: It's possible to adjust the steps in which the station is being moved. See chapter 4.5 for details.

4.3 Rotating stations

Each unfixed station can be rotated via the [rotate station ...] hotkeys along all three axis. A built-in
collision detection avoids rotating a station into another one and issues a warning message
To speed up the process of rotating stations several steps of a rotation (press key repeatedly) can be
done successively.

Note: It's possible to adjust the steps in which the station is being rotated. See chapter 4.5 for
details.

Factory Complex Constructor 4.02: Manual

4.4 Resetting rotation

It is possible to reset the rotation values of a station in all three axis to zero. Do the following:
Light-Edition: Select an unfixed station and press the [Reset Rotation] Hotkey.
Plus-Edition: Select an unfixed station and press the [Secure Station] Hotkey twice (!) .

4.5 Adjusting movement and rotation steps

To allow either very precise or very fast station movement/rotation, the movement/rotation steps
can be increased or decreased via the associated Hotkeys.

Single steps are subdivided in the following way:

 movement (meters): 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, 10000 (Standard: 250)

 rotation (degrees): 7.5, 15, 22.5, 30, 45 (Standard: 45)

Note: You can review your current settings in the FCC system report.

4.6 Camera drones P

This feature is only available in the PLUS edition!

Camera drones are a helpful

feature in the FCC to get a closer
look at your stations. Using the
drones, you can take a look at
your station from every angle
without moving your ship. There
are six drones (one for every
axis).

These drones are equipped with

transporter devices – you can
transport yourself in one of the
drones and fly it like a ship.

The drones will spawn if you unfix the first Station in a sector. If you fix this station, they will be
removed – excepting if you are in one of the drones.. If you're in one of the drones and fix the
station, the drone will be destroyed automatically if you leave it.

Standard Equipment in Camera Drones:

 2x 1MJ-Shield
 Duplex Scanner
 Transporter Device
 Ecliptic Projector
 SETA

Please note that camera drones are equipped with anti-theft-systems. It is not recommended to try
stealing the drones or their equipment.

4.7 Saving a Reference Object P

This feature is only available in the Plus-Edition!

If you want to align new factories to a station which is already connected to a complex, you cannot
choose the station from the list in the sector map. But you can use this feature to get the reference
position.
First, you have to target the desired station. To do this, see the instructions at the bottom of this
page.
When you have targetet a station, press the “Rotate Station Z-” -Hotkey (at a fixed station). Now, a
new point in the sector map shows up. It contains the name of the saved station – for example:
<Saved: Your Wheat Farm M Alpha>
If you select this point as the reference for building a new station, it will be aligned to the saved
station.

4.8 Moving complexes

The best way to build a good-looking complex is to bring all stations into the correct position before
you connect them. But if you're not satisfied with the result after connecting all your stations, don't
worry – the FCC allows movement and rotation of stations even after they have been connected to a
complex. Furthermore, it is possible to move a whole complex.

a) Moving a station in a complex

In case that you want to move or rotate a single station which has been connected to a complex, it's
possible to move /rotate it like a single station – See chapter 4.2 and 4.3 for further explanations. But
there are some specialities which should be kept in mind when working with complexes.
 It's not easy to target the desired factory if it's in a complex. You will have to use the “search
target” command (press 't') while the factory is in your crosshair. If you're lucky, the correct
station will be targeted.
 If you unfix a normal station, its name will be set into { } brackets for easier identification.
 Due to limitations of the game's script editor, it is not possible to get any control over the
complex tubes which connect the factories. This means, the tubes will stay at the old
position, even if you moved the station. If you want to re-create the tubes, you have to add a
new factory to the complex! (Note the following tip)
 Tip: To recreate the complex tubes, build a new control centre, and connect it to the old one.
Now it will disappear, and all complex tubes will be recreated. To build a single control
centre, use the FCC command and select a complex construction kit.

Tageting a station in a complex:

Unfortunately the process of targeting a station which is built into a complex has become a bit
complicated since patch 2.5 as you can no longer target it by simply pressing 't'.
Due to this, the FCC offers a few functions to target a station in a complex. First, you can switch
through all Stations of a complex. Target the hub of a complex (which has to be fixed!) and press the
'Rotate Station X+' respectively 'Rotate Station X' Hotkeys to select a station.
You can also target a complex hub and press the 'Send report' Hotkey, this will target the nearest
station to you. Note that the playership must not be further away from the station than 1500
metres!

Factory Complex Constructor 4.02: Manual

B) Moving an entire complex

It's even possible to move an entire complex with the FCC. As a first step, you will have to unfix the
complex. Select the complex hub and press the [Fix/Unfix Complex] - Hotkey. The Name of the
control centre will change for easier identification.
Now you can move the complex like every other station.

But here are some specialities, too:

 It's impossible to rotate a complex.

 When moving a large complex, it will take the script some time to move all stations. So don't
be too hasty.

4.10 Subtitle Informations

While moving or rotating stations, the FCC will automatically display informations about the position
or the rotation of the selected station in the subtitles. You don't have to enable subtitles in the
options menu.

4.11 Secure Stations P

This feature is only available in the Plus-Edition!

Every complex builder knows the sound of colliding stations – some “hammering” noise which means
that your stations will soon be nothing but space dust. But there's no need to load the latest
savegame: Simply press the [Secure Position] - hotkey when targeting a colliding station. The Station
will be set to a safe position. Note that it will take the script some time until a safe position has been
found.

Factory Complex Constructor 4.02: Manual

4.10 Station informations P

This feature is only available in the Plus-Edition!

To get detailed informations about a station, including position, rotation, size, production
informations and much more, press the [Show Station Infos] while targeting one of your stations. You
will get a message like the one in the image below.

Note: This image isfrom an old version., it may

differ from recent ones.

5. OOS Station building P

This feature is only available in the Plus-Edition!
OOS: Out of Sector; IS: In Sector

Busy X3-Players don't always have

enough time to do everything
him/herself. Unfortunately, You can
only build stations while you're in
the same sector. That's senseless, a
waste of time.

Because of that, You can build

stations with the FCC even while
you're OOS. it works exactly like
building stations IS – with some
exceptions.

OOS station building works like building them IS. See chapters 3.1 and 3.2 for details.

Disadvantages of OOS Station building:

If you build a station while IS, the FCC prevents collisions with other stations. But the X3-engine does
only calculate the physics (collisions) for the current sector, yet not for any other one. Because of
this, the FCC contains a system which “simulates” the collision even OOS. Unfortunately, this system
isn't as precise as the “normal” collision prevention.

Important:
If you want to use a modification which adds new stations to X3, you have to create a custom library!
This is required if you want to use this feature.
For further explanations how to create a custom library, see chapter 6.1.

Factory Complex Constructor 4.02: Manual

6. Complex Connections (Nodes)

In order to build a good-

looking complex, it is
essential to know how
the connection
interfaces, called nodes,
work. At first we need
some more background
information.

6.1 Background Information on Nodes

Every station has interfaces which connects the pipes. These interface are called “nodes”. The
number of nodes varies with each station. Stations with a single node cannot transfer pipelines to
another station. This case requires a new pipeline from the control centre to that station. The
control centre has 3 nodes. If there is no free node available in the complex, one of the existing tubes
will turn into a branching.

6.2 Table of Node Values

You can find an up-to-date table of node values at http://www.komplexbaugilde.de/

WARNING – The site is in german, but it should be no problem to find the information about the
nodes.

8.4 Compatibility with other scripts and/or mods

The Factory Complex Constructor is compatible with any other script or mod, as long as they do not
use the same command slots or text pages. See the compatibility list at the Egosoft forum for details.

8.5 Changing the edition

This script is available in two different editions (see chapter 1.1). It is possible to switch between
these versions. The most simple method to do this is to download the file which contains the desired
edition and to install it (See chapter 2). If you load one of your savegames, you will receive a message
which asks you if you want to change the edition.

Please note: When changing the edition, it will become necessary to reset all hotkeys. This means,
you will have to re-configure your hotkeys if you change the edition.

8.6 Creating a custom station library P

This feature is only available in the Plus-Edition!

For the OOS-station-building-feature, the FCC requires data about the stations. This informations are
stored in a library. The FCC comes with a library which includes all stations available in the “vanilla”-
game. If you want to use a modification which adds new stations to the game, you will have to create
a custom library.

To create a library, get a report from the FCC. Select “Create custom Library”. You'll get another
message where you have to decide if you really want to create the library now.

ATTENTION! Creating a library takes up to 30 minutes. In this time, X3 will NOT respond!

You'll get an acoustic signal every few seconds while the FCC creates the library. As long as you hear
the beep-sound, it is still working. When the library has been finished, you'll get a message.
It's important that you save your game now – otherwise, the library will be lost!
