Course Outline Multi Variable Calculus
Course Outline Multi Variable Calculus
Course Objective:
This course aims to master the techniques of calculus in two and three variables, such as finding and
analyzing critical points, and evaluating multiple integrals. More broadly, we will attempt to develop
an underlying geometric intuition that will allow us to understand the problems on a qualitative (as
well as quantitative) level.
Learning Outcomes:
Student should be able to
Define concepts of point and vector in any dimension.
Understand dot and cross products and their geometric meaning
Understand objects in 3D like lines, planes and quadric surfaces etc.
Understand limit and continuity of function of two variables
Define derivative of a parameterized curve and illustrate geometric (tangent line) and physical
meanings (velocity vector) with the aid of sketches
Understand and compute partial derivatives
Understand definition of directional derivative and gradient and illustrate geometric meanings
with the aid of sketches
Compute maximum and minimum values for functions of two or more variables with and
without constrained
Compute double and triple integrals
Understand and use the three big theorem of calculus (Green’s theorem, Divergence theorem
and Stokes theorem)
