STEM 12 – F ARADAY Entrepreneurship

Activity 1: Entrepreneurship Scavenger Hunt

Part I

Answers:

Steve Jobs
1. It is important to make connections because it benefits both parties involved— you
and the person you have developed the connection with. It helps and allows us to
understand and master the world. By connecting thoughts and ideas from different
aspects, we can be successful in the world we live in. Jobs once said creativity is
connecting things. He meant that people with a broad set of life experiences can
often see things that others miss. This can be as simple as perceiving the need to
bring your umbrella to work when the sky is dull and cloudy, to settling on keen
money related choices since you understand different business angles.
2. When he returned in Apple in 1997, he took a company with 350 products and
reduced them to 10 products in a two-year period.

Dennis Crowley
1. It provides a personalized local search experience for its users. By taking into
account the places a user goes, the things they have told the app that they like, and
the other users whose advice they trust.
2. The key things Crowley seems to be highlighting are the courage to succeed, and the
strength to keep going even if you fail. In essence, balls and perseverance.

Pete Cashmore
1.  Execution really shapes whether your company takes off or not.
2. It is important to set up your employees to realize their passion because you don’t
get the best work from people if you’re guiding them versus them guiding
themselves.

Mark Cuban
1. He thinks open offices keep everyone in tune with what is going on and keep the
energy up and there is nothing private in a start-up.
2. Since it's a start-up so there are just a few employees, let them use what they know.
It is always good to start with a small bite of anything. It is also necessary to keep
gaining knowledge of the kind of innovations happening and how they might prove
advantageous for your particular trade.
3. He says to keep a pulse on the stress levels and accomplishments of your people
and reward them.

Estee Lauder
1. Two of my favorite pieces of advice by Lauder are “Learn to say no” and “Keep your
own image straight in your mind.”

Mark Zuckerberg
1. Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook was so that users could share information with
each other. Users had the freedom to share as much or as little as they want about
themselves. He wanted to create an environment in which you could send messages,
share pictures, look at other people's pictures, share videos and links and have
ongoing
conversations with each other. This way, people can stay connected with each other
regardless of their physical locations.
2. He does not believe in the thought that the endpoint is when you sell the company or
go public. He is more of a free thinker and strategist who makes his company
decisions based on his own accord and the counsel from his top advisers.
Jeff Bezos
1. According to Bezos, what’s difficult to sell is the "hard middle" - marketing an product,
where the gross profit per sale is low, to a small group.
2. More and more money will go into making a great customer experience, such as
product
prices and free shipping while less will go into shouting about the service.

Part II

These entrepreneurs succeed in life because they understand that challenges are
lessons and opportunities for greater growth. They realize there is no one thing. They
know that there are hundreds of things and steps to accomplish any major achievement.
They focus all their time on growth because they have self-discipline. For me, it is the most
important aspect that each entrepreneurs should acquire because it helps you grow in
every area of your life and it cuts out the typical time wasters. With self-control, it has the
remedies the need to accomplish even if there are huge obstacles along the way. It
expresses itself as perseverance, the ability not to give up despite failures and ability to
resist temptations and distractions that tend to stand in the way of attaining aims and
goals. It leads to positive work ethic and work ethic leads to getting things done effectively
and efficiently.

2. No, FieldFresh Foods should not dwell only on corn, they should also try to
contemplate different products which is not useful for their company but also in addition
for different nations. By the use of business expansion, it can provide several
advantages, including greater opportunities for market growth and diversification.
3. Yes, maintaining its primary export focus and avoiding too many things at once is the
key to develop and grow the company.

Hydrogen Power Co. Case Study

Answers:

1. No, their scope is immense which is made out of various areas that relies upon what
sort of energy that is plenteous in that area.
2. Yes, when private companies and academia collaborate there is a huge stimulus and
catalyst for economic growth. These partnerships between industry and academia have
proved to be far more effective than conventional modes of funding which rely upon discrete
projects and have helped in boosting global knowledge as well as the global economy.
3. Yes, the relationships between universities and companies enable both entities to
sustain growth in their areas. While companies rely on university researchers for product
innovations, faculty gain prestige through increased external research funds. Just as
industry needs innovative ideas to ensure profits, researchers need additional research
dollars to sustain faculty productivity.
4. Both universities and private companies can benefit from one another. Universities
have become more entrepreneurial in their outlook, and companies now have a greater
appreciation for the expertise of academic researchers and how that can contribute to
their business success. A successful cooperation between university and company lies in
a mutual respect for each area of expertise. It’s an important thing to understand about
the parameters and goals of the research undertaken on the academic side and how the
results will be shared and used on the corporate side. Both sides need to foster leaders
capable of crossing the gap and building ties between the corporate and university
worlds.
