QUESTION:

Students in Tanzania have several problems in constructing grammatical and correct sentence in
English? Base on subject-verb agreement in English, identify and explain major causes of
these problems. Provided two example for each causes after identified the causes of the
problems, suggest strategies that students can use to overcome these problems.
Gramma. Is the whole and structure of the language in general usually taken as consisting of

syntax and morphology including inflections and sometimes also phonology and semantics.

Massamba, Kihore and Msanjila, (2007)

The following below is identification of grammatical problems basing on verb agreement and its

strategies.

I. Subject-verb disagreement, Example 1.

a) Incorrect: The efforts of the cat to reach the cookie jar was in vain.

correct : The efforts of the cat to reach the cooker jar were in vain.

The strategy here at a quick glace the subject seems to reach to be ‘cat’ but the subject here is

actually struggles, since the subject is plural, the association verb also need to be plural

‘were’ instead of singular ‘was’

Example 2.

b) Incorrect: He along with a few other officials were charged in the paper leak case.

Correct: He along with a few other officials was charged in the paper leak case.

II. Run-on sentences and comma splices,Sarah Sadowski(2009).

Example

I love painting and I am getting enough time for it as well but the exhibition.Sentence has three

separative clauses.

Strategies there are two ways to correct this as follows

Examples
1. I love painting, and I am getting enough time for it as well but the exhibition deadline is

stressing me out.

2. I love painting, I am getting enough time for it as well the exhibition deadline is stressing

me out.

III. Use of pronouns in subject position. CyprianVumilia(2018) .

Example ( a) Charles ameondoka. (in Kiswahili)

Charles he has left. (inEnglish)

The correct sentence should be written in this form,

Charles has left.

Example( b) Vivian Nimemuona.(in Kiswahili)

Vivian I have seen her (in English)

The sentence should be written in the following forms of correctness

I have seen Vivian or I have seen her.

In English a subject and its pronoun cannot be usedtogether thus the above sentences has
corrected in a form of giving well meaningful.
