Gen. Chem.

Within criminology, it is significant to examine why individuals commit crimes and how to prevent and handle crime. The course "Chemistry and Crime" examines the chemistry behind major crimes like arson, drugs, and murder through the analysis of forensic evidence. Students learn scientific concepts through case studies and explore the limits of evidence. By the end of the course, students will have a stronger understanding of the nature of scientific evidence and their responsibilities as jurors.

Within criminology, it is quite significant to examine the reasons as to why individuals commit crime, in

the continuing debate with regard to how to prevent as well as handle crime. Chemistry and Crime is a
course for non-science majors at Saint Vincent that looks at the chemistry behind major crimes
(such as arson, drugs, or murder) and the science underlying the analysis of evidence. Scientific
concepts are introduced in class through the context of a number of forensic cases. Students also
encounter cases from the Innocence Project as a way to understand the multiple ways that evidence
is and isn’t used. In the laboratory students test various materials and carry out different procedures
that reveal the limits of scientific evidence. By the end of the course, students will have a stronger
grasp of the nature of scientific evidence and their responsibilities as a juror.

By the end of this course, each student should be able to:

a. identify and understand the basic chemistry behind evidence collection and testing;
b. objectively think about evidence presentation and how this evidence could affect the outcome of a
trial.
c. have greater awareness of the serious responsibilities that jurors are charged with in the justice system.
Criminology is the scientific approach to studying crime behavior according to Larry Siegel. While,
organic chemistry is a branch of chemistry that studies the structure, properties and reactions of
organic compounds, which contain carbon in covalent bonding. Some people might ask if what is the
connection of chemistry in studying criminology, particularly organic chemistry?

As s criminology student, the purpose or goal of our course is to determine the root causes of
criminal behavior and develop effective and humane means for addressing and preventing it.
Who commits crimes, why commit them, their impact and how to prevent it. That’s why it’s
important to study organic chemistry, because in everything we do it involves chemistry. It looks
like that organic chemistry is behind major crimes such as drugs, or murder. For example, the
importance of organic chemistry is seen in medicine in
medicine, organic chemistry finds
its use in three ways like the drugs, to study the disease and for diagnosis. Food
Even beverages made of ethyl alcohol like the beer, wines, vodka have organic
matter in them. The knowledge of organic chemistry helps regulates the
flavor, quality, and storage of these beverages. Textiles and clothing: Cloth is
made of cotton, wool, silk, polyester, etc. All these materials are organic. This
chemistry helps in the study of textiles material, their improvement for
durability, color and cleaning process. Cleansing agents: In industries and
labs, organic solvents are widely used for cleaning. Thus organic chemistry
through its knowledge of polarity, solubility, partition factors uses solvents for
better use. Valuables: Diamonds, graphite, petroleum. Interestingly the carbon
compounds are found to be highly valuable, durable and hardest in the world.
Diamond and graphite are both pure carbon alone compounds without any
other elements inside. They are both highly used and expensive. Their
properties are studies in organic chemistry. So most of the substances we use
in our daily life are organic. These include eatables like milk, bread, sugar. Also
clothes, shoes, belts, computers, tires, medicines, etc. Why am I saying this? It’s
because chemistry is part in studying criminology, as we all know that we need
to collect evidence or solve crimes in the future therefore studying, classifying,
identifying and understanding organic chemistry is really important to us.
knowing the importance of it will benefit us for example in solving a crime examining the
body part of the suspect this examination involves chemistry, fingerprint check,
checking the evidence also if there’s a criminal case for murder then the evidence of
everything on the scene will be checked with chemicals so that the case can be solved.

Studying organic chemistry in criminology will help us, that we should be able to identify
and understand the basic chemistry behind evidence collection and testing.
