Mitochondrion: Name: - Darlyn I. Amplayo - Section: - A2-Pyponco

This document contains a worksheet for nursing students on cellular aberration. It includes: 1) A diagram of the parts of a cell and instructions to label and color the diagram for points. 2) A description of the phases of the cell cycle including G1, G0, S phase, G2, and M phase. 3) A brief explanation that cell differentiation involves major changes to a cell's size, appearance, metabolism, and function through selectively expressing genes via transcription factors.

II.Phases of the Cell Cycle. Describe briefly what happens in each phase of the Cell Cycle. (10
points)

1. G1 – Metabolic changes prepare the cell for division. At a certain point - the restriction point - the
cell is committed to division and moves into the S phase.

2. G0 – Stationary period at rest

3. S phase – DNA synthesis replicates the genetic material. Each chromosome now consists of two
sister chromatids

4. G2 – Metabolic changes assemble the cytoplasmic materials necessary for mitosis and cytokinesis

5. M phase – A nuclear division (mitosis) followed by a cell division (cytokinesis).

III. Briefly describe the process of Cell Differentiation. (5 points)

Cell Differentiation take major changes in its size, appearance, metabolic activity, and overall
function. In order for a cell to differentiate into its specialized form and function, it need only manipulate
those genes (and thus those proteins) that will be expressed, and not those that will remain silent. The
primary mechanism by which genes are turned “on” or “off” is through transcription factors.
