General Information - For Virtual Learning

Description
This class is designed to build upon what was taught in previous years. We will be exploring math
ideas, deepening one’s understanding, questioning the given, and providing reasoning to one’s
answers. We will work towards touching on the four stages of mathematics: Posing a question,
going from the real world to a mathematical model, performing a calculation, and going from
the model back to the real world to see if the original question was answered.
Students will be responsible for their learning, as well as the learning of their peers. We are in this
together. I expect you to work together and discuss the topics with each other.

Expectations and Goals

Here you will find what will be expected of you as a student in Math class and the goals for a
successful year.

Expectations
● Attendance: Attend live zoom classes Monday- Thursday, and complete the daily work.
This will count for your attendance each day. Fridays will be independent work and
small group zoom meetings with me.
● If an emergency occurs, please notify me through email as soon as possible, and provide
a note from your parent/guardian/doctor to the office at
andrea.o’neal@[Link] or fax it to (614) 836-6063.
● Be class ready. What this means:
o Virtual: Your device is charged, you are in a section of your home that allows you
to learn best, distractions are at a minimum, and necessities are with you.
● Collaborate with your groupmates in a respectful manner. Stay on task and do your part.
I expect work from each one of you. There is no sitting back and letting someone else do
the work for you.
● You are to work on the bell ringers and exit tickets every day they are provided. This will
allow for feedback on the day’s lesson, your understanding, and your attendance and
grade.

Goals
● Enjoyment of the subject
● Collaboration with classmates
● Work through the four stages of mathematics
o Posing a question
o Going from the real world to a mathematical model
o Performing a calculation
o Going from the model back to the real world to see if the original question was
answered.
● Expand on previous understanding and build new connections (of what?)
● Connect classroom lessons to real-world experiences
● Developing critical thinking and 21st-century skills

Course Requirements

Deadlines
● Classwork for live sessions will be due at midnight. All other work is due on the date listed.
See the assignment to determine which one applies. If no date is listed, please reach out
asap for clarification.
● If the assignment is turned in late, this can affect one’s attendance and grade. Multiple
instances may result in a meeting with myself and possible communication with your
parent(s)/guardian(s).
● Students will be allowed to resubmit work if the improvement is needed until the end of
the current grading period, though if it is more than a week old, do not expect it back
immediately.

Grading
● The grading scale will be as follows.

● A ● 4

● B ● 3

● C ● 2

● D ● 1

● F ● 0

● The possible ways a student may be graded are the following:

o Did the student ask questions?

o Did the student show their work in different ways?

o Did the student provide a reason for their answer and justify said reason?

o Did the student build upon each other’s thinking during group work?

Page 2
● The students will be receiving more constructive and positive feedback during the school
year on the work they provide. This gives opportunities to conference one-on-one with
myself if they desire or are needed.
