Introduction:Ohmmeter and Micro-Ohmmeter
-An ohmmeter is an electrical instrument that measures electrical resistance (the opposition offered
by a substance to the flow of electric current) .
- Micro-ohmmeters (microhmmeter or micro ohmmeter) make low resistance measurements.
Megohmmeters (also a trademarked device Megger) measure large values of resistance
What is an ohmmeter?
-An ohmmeter is an essential diagnostic tool that provides valuable information about electrical
appliances and systems. It measures electric resistance, expressed as ohms, accurately to help you
troubleshoot specific electrical issues.
Why do I need an ohmmeter?
-First, you need this tool to get accurate electric resistance readouts. You can use the data to
pinpoint the exact areas in your electrical equipment or fixture that needs fixing. Second, you need
it to perform the tests safely.
How does an ohmmeter work?
An ohmmeter features a set of prongs that record electronic feeds. The prongs are sensitive to
changes in electric resistance. They send the recorded data to the display screen.
What should I look for in an ohmmeter?
There are so many essential factors you have to consider. For one, look for an ohmmeter that
provides clear and accurate readings. You also need a multimeter with auto-range, data hold, battery
indicator, and an impressive warranty.
What is Micro-Ohmmeter used for?
Micro-Ohmmeters, Milliohmmeters, and Megohmmeters measure resistance in different ranges,
but for very different applications of electrical testing. The Micro-Ohmmeter is used to measure
extremely low resistances with high accuracy at specified test currents and is used for contact and
bonding applications.

Operation
Note:
1. The battery is charged before shipment, operation when first received is permitted.
2. After the START/STOP button is pressed to start measurement, the unit cannot
be stopped until the first measurement is completed.
3. When the LED light with inductance symbol is on, this indicates the measurement
is for both resistive materials and inductive materials. When the LED light with
inductance symbol is off, inductive material cannot be measured.

The Working Principle of Micro-ohm Meters (Extech UM200):
-For high-precision measurements such as those required for milliohms or micro-ohms, two-
terminal measurements are not adequate since the test lead and contact resistance are added to the
measurement value causing significant errors.
Extech UM200 Page 5
Ohmmeter
To overcome these errors, milliohm and micro-ohm meters use a four-terminal measurement
technique called Kelvin sensing. Of the four terminals, two are used for voltage measurement and
the other for current sensing. This minimizes any voltage drop due to the resistance of the first pair
of leads and their contact resistances are ignored by the meter.
Kelvin Method:
This method of measurement which avoids errors caused by wire resistance is called the Kelvin,
or 4-wire method. Special connecting clips called Kelvin clips are made to facilitate this kind of
connection across a subject resistance:
In regular, “alligator” style clips, both halves of the jaw are electrically common to each other,
usually joined at the hinge point. In Kelvin clips, the jaw halves are insulated from each other at the
hinge point, only contacting at the tips where they clasp the wire or terminal of the subject being
measured. Thus, current through the “C” (“current”) jaw halves does not go through the “P”
(“potential,” or voltage) jaw halves, and will not create any error-inducing voltage drop along their
length:
Conclusion:
We trust that you find the above guide useful in understanding ohmmeters better. As you consider
our top picks, it is advisable to compare them adequately and use the buying guide to arrive at your
most desired device. In the end, whatever ohmmeter you choose should provide you with clear
resistance readouts.
