2019 Partnership

Pennington School R-7– End of Term Summary

The Smith Family are a national, independent children’s education charity that helps disadvantaged young Australians
to succeed at school, so that they can create better futures for themselves. Our success is measured on:

 School attendance: regular school attendance to achieve positive educational outcomes.


 Advancement: completion of Year 12 or equivalent.
 Engagement: post school engagement in education or work.

Learning for Life Scholarships

We are partnered with 14 schools in the Port Adelaide Enfield community and there are currently 1074 students
registered on the program.

Pennington School has 62 children receiving the Learning for Life Scholarship, which equates to over $28,000 a year
being invested in education related expenses (excursions, stationary, uniforms, shoes etc.). This will continue to
increase until The Smith Family’s growth project concludes in June 2020, where 1200 children will be on the program.
We have tripled the scholarship numbers at Pennington Primary School since 2018.

Pennington School R-7– End of Term Summary

Students aged 8-14 who are behind in their reading age are matched with a student buddy who they read to 2-3 times
a week over the phone. **2 student enrolled in phase 2 have completed the program. Recruitment for 2020 will
begin in Term 4 (2019). Please feel free to refer students who you think might need reading support.**

Learning Club
A safe and supportive out-of-school environment where students can participate in activities
that develop both their academic and social skills, and gain assistance with their homework.

Straightalk
Straightalk is a community speaker program that allows students to hear from and interact with people from all walks
of life. The program can be offered at any time for any year level. Speakers can be arranged to fit specific themes
(Health, Hospitality, and Environment). **Three entrepreneurs presented a Straightalk to Kidpreneur participants
on 12th September 2019. On offer all year round**

University Experience Day


University Experience Days takes students to university campuses to encourage post-school planning and tertiary
aspiration. The program is subject to funding from year to year, but is suitable for primary students and high school
students. **On offer for 2020.**

Kidpreneur
An immersive experiential entrepreneurship program where students build their own micro-business, creating, making,
pitching & selling their own products or services. **Stasha Andrews is running this program for 50 students from
Year 6 and 7 in term 3 and 4. On offer for 2020**

TechPros
TechPro is a fun and interactive program which will enable students to develop their foundational digital skills that are
required to complete in-class tasks, homework and assignments. By participating in this program, students will have
an opportunity to improve their digital and problem solving skills with the support of a mentor. **On offer for 2020 **

Passport to Success
A brand new program for Year 7 students. Program will run in Term 4 for 6 weeks during school time (1 hour sessions
weekly) and helps prepare students for their transition to High School. A trained facilitator runs the program and topics
covered include – homework time and help, time management, goal setting, study skills, what to expect in high school,
concerns and fears, managing self and others. Stasha Andrews running this program for 27 students from Year 7
in term 4. On offer for 2020**

Young ICT Explorers


The Young ICT Explorers Accelerator Program supports teachers in encouraging disadvantaged students to explore
technology and equip themselves with skills for the future. YICTE is a non-profit competition created to encourage
school students in years 3 to 12 to create a technology-based project of their choice, and submit the project to the
competition. Suitable projects are invited to enter the state/territory finals, where students are asked to pitch their
project to a panel of ICT industry expert judges. **Pete Beveridge (STEM Teacher) along with 4 students have
been invited to the state competition on 30th October 2019.**
