1.

Preventive Enforcement - is the deterrence of crime and other violations through the
presence, or suggested presence, of enforcement personnel.
2. Selective Enforcement – meaning there is only a specific area that enforcers protect or
patrolled to.
3. Traffic Enforcement - Parking and traffic enforcement provides one of the biggest
chances for officers and residents to interact. For most drivers, the most likely outcome
is a verbal warning or written citation. In other cases, however, traffic stops might end
with a stolen car's recovery or a fugitive's arrest. To protect themselves, officers watch
for extreme nervousness, furtive movements, and lack of eye contract. Many
departments actively teach this strategy, which heightens the officer's ability to protect
himself by reading behavioural cues.
4. Calls of service - One of the duties and purposes of patrol is the handling of
emergency calls for service. Since the handling of emergency calls for service is one of
the basic duties of the patrol officer, he should be trained in first aid and water life-saving
emergencies.

7. Preservation of evidence - is the process of seizing suspect property without altering or
changing the contents of data that resides on devices and removable media.
8. Inspectional Service - patrol activity tends to reduce criminal opportunity and accidents
9. Conduct Initial Investigation - Most crimes reported to the police are not major
incidents and usually the officer who first attends is the only resource that is
required. This officer may be the investigator throughout the enquiry. The quality of
the investigation, whether carried out in person or over the telephone, is a significant
factor in gathering material that leads to the detection of a crime. There may be
limited opportunities to locate and gather material and it is vital that those who
conduct the initial investigation ensure that material is not lost. Once a crime has
been allocated to an investigator, it is important that they gather material from
whoever took the initial report. Investigations should be conducted thoroughly, and
investigators should not assume that a crime cannot be solved or that someone else
will carry out an investigation at a later stage.Officers initially deployed to an incident
are likely to have a number of competing demands placed on them. These demands
include:

 dealing with a violent situation

 providing first aid and calling for medical assistance
 reassuring victims and witnesses
 preventing public disorder.

10. Court Testimony - refers to the statements made by witnesses and, when relevant,
defendants during the course of a trial. These statements, including prepared comments
and answers to questions posed by prosecutors and defense attorneys, are made under
oath. As such, court testimony is legally required to be truthful. Statements made by
witnesses and others under oath that are subsequently revealed to be false are labeled
“perjury.” Individuals found guilty of perjury can be prosecuted for lying while under oath.

OBJECTIVES OF POLICE PATROL

1. Preventive Enforcement
Preventive enforcement falls under the heading of protection, and involves the prevention of crime
through the noticeable presence of police vehicles and personnel.

Sir Robert Peel first presented preventive enforcement as a criminological philosophy. And this had been
regarded as the soundest of all criminological theories. “It is much easier to patch a crack in the dike
than to repair the wall after it has broken.  An ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure.”

2. Selective Enforcement
This involves going either where the trouble is, or where the trouble likely to occur.
If a certain area is subject to a high crime rate, the patrol cars spend a greater part of their patrolling
time in that area.

3. Traffic Enforcement
Large police departments have traffic divisions, but the majorities of the departments are small, and
have only patrol division to handle traffic enforcement.
Traffic enforcement is strongly dependent upon personal contact between the patrol officers and the
violators. The important thing is that the violator is stopped and the violation is brought to his attention.

4. Emergency Call for Service

One of the duties and purposes of patrol is the handling of emergency calls for service. Since the
handling of emergency calls for service is one of the basic duties of the patrol officer, he should be
trained in first aid and water life-saving emergencies.

5. Routine Call for Service

Routine call account for the majority of services provided by the patrol division. Because of this, officers
have to guard against becoming callused and indifferent to calls of this nature.

1. Called for Service - incidents requiring immediate police action

2. Inspectional Service - patrol activity tends to reduce criminal opportunity and accidents

3. Routine Patrol - directed at less tangible hazards such as poor lighted areas, business section, etc…
