This paper investigates the use of code-switching in teaching English as a second language to second year English majors at Saint Joseph College. It will analyze students' perceptions of and experiences with code-switching, the functions of code-switching, and the positive and negative effects. The study aims to serve as a model for future research on second language teaching and learning. It also seeks to provide benefits to students, teachers, and administrators by exploring the effectiveness of using code-switching in the classroom. The scope is limited to code-switching, students' profiles, perceptions, functions, and the impacts of code-switching. Key terms are also defined for the study.

Statement of the Problem

This paper investigates the use of code- switching in teaching English as a second

language of the Second Year, English Majors of Saint Joseph College.

Specifically it analyzes the following:

1. Respondent`s Profile in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

2. The perceptions of students in using code- switching.

3. The functions of code- switching.

4. The positive and negative effects of code- switching.

Significance of the Study

This paper will become a model research paper for future studies on Second Language

Teaching and Learning.

Furthermore, this will benefit the following:

1. Students, for them to know if using or applying code- switching is effective or not.

2. Teachers, for them to be fully aware with the different ways in dealing with this

situation.

3. Administrator, to analyze whether code- switching should be implemented or not.


Scope and Limitations

The scope of this paper is the use of code- switching in teaching English as a second

language.

The limitations of this paper are from the following sub- problems.

1. Respondent`s Profile in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

2. The perceptions of students in using code- switching.

3. The functions of code- switching.

4. The positive and negative effects of code- switching.


DEFINITION OF TERMS

Utterance - Something uttered; especially: an oral or written statement: a stated or published

expression

Spontaneity- The quality or state of spontaneous

Affective- Relating to, arising from, or influencing feelings or emotions

Perception- The way you think about or understand someone or something

Prestige- The respect and admiration that someone or something gets for being successful or

important.

Exploit- An exciting act or action

Solidarity- A feeling of unity between people who have the same interests and goals.

Intimate- To say or suggest something in an indirect way

Stopgap- A temporary substitute

Bilingual- Able to speak and understand two languages
