Module 1 - Les #7 Arches

This document contains a lesson on arches that is part of a civil engineering curriculum. [1] It defines an arch and its key aspects, as well as different types of arches including fixed, two-hinged, three-hinged, and tied arches. [2] Sample problems are provided on calculating the reactions, shear, axial load, and bending moment in three-hinged and fixed arches under different loading conditions. [3] References are given for additional reading on structural analysis and arches from textbooks and online sources.

Lesson 7: Arches
MODULE 1-PRELIM
LESSON #7: Arches

In this lesson you will be able to identify some of the important aspects related to the structural analysis of
arches and solve the forces acting on arches subjected to a concentrated load and to a uniform loads.

All concepts sample problems and figures are from the followings books,

 Hibbeler, R. C.(2017). Structural analysis 9th ed. Boston, Pearson

 Leet, Kenneth M. (2011). Fundamentals of structural analysis, McGraw-Hill, Boston

 Kassimali, Aslam (2010). Structural analysis, Cengage Learning, Stamford, CT USA

 J Rungamornrat (2011). Fundamental of Structural Analysis, Rungamornrat, Bangkok Thailand

Arch

• Use to reduce the bending moments in long span structures

• Acts as an inverted cable, so it receives its load mainly in compression

• Has parabolic shape and it is subjected to a uniform horizontally distributed vertical load.

Types of arches

Fixed Arch

• Is often made of reinforced concrete

• It must have a solid foundation abutments.

Two Hinged Arch

• Commonly made from metal or timber .

• It is indeterminate to the first degree.

• Insensitive to settlement.

Three Hinged Arch

• Commonly made from metal or timber

• It is statically determinate

• It is not affected by settlement or temperature changes.

• Can also take the form of two pin-connected trusses

Tied Arch

• Allow structure to behave as a rigid unit

• Carries the horizontal component of truss at the supports.

• It is unaffected by relative settlement of the supports.

Problem#1;(P7.7, Fundamentals of Structural

Analysis, Kenneth Leet 4th ed.)

Compute the reactions at supports A and E of the

three-hinged parabolic arch in the Figure. Next
compute the shear, axial load, and moment at
point D, located at the quarter points.

Solution:

Solve for the reactions

For Shear, axial and moment at D.
