Explain brief-HSCSD For 2.5 GSM ?:, S - S S Ccess - e e C e e Sess o S S e S ST S

HSCSD allows individual GSM data users to use consecutive time slots, increasing the data rate from 9,600 bps to 14,400 bps. By using up to four consecutive time slots, HSCSD can provide up to 57 kbps to users. HSCSD simply requires a software change to existing GSM base stations. EDGE introduces 8-PSK modulation and multiple modulation schemes to GSM, allowing data rates up to 384 kbps for a single user on a single GSM channel. EDGE requires new hardware and software at base stations but provides a common upgrade path for both GSM and IS-136 networks to 3G. It uses incremental redundancy to adaptively select the best modulation scheme based

1. Explain brief-HSCSD for 2.5 GSM ?

As the name implies,High Speed Circuit Switched Data is a circuit switched

techniquethatallowsa single mobilesubscriber to use consecutiveuser time slots in
the GSM standard. That is,instead of limiting each user to only one specific time
slot in the GSM TDMA standard, HSCSD allows individual data users to
commandeer consecutive time slots in order to obtain higher speed data access
on the GSM network. HSCSD relaxes theerrorcontrol coding algorithms originally
speci fied in the GSM standard for data transmissions and increases the avai able
application data rate to 14,400 bps, as compared to the original 9,600 bps in the
GSM specification.By using up to four consecutive time slots, HSCSD is able to
provide a raw transmission rate of up to 57 kbps to individual users, and this
enhanced data offering can be billed as a premium service by the carrier. HSCSD is
ideal for dedicated streaming Internet access or real-time interactive web sessions
and simply requires the service provider to implement a software change at
existing GSM base stations.

2. What do you mean by EDGE for 2.5G GSM and IS-136 ?

Enhanced Data rares for GSM (or Global) Evol ution is a more advanced
upgrade to the GSM standard ,and requires the addition of n ewhardware
andsoftwareatex i isti ngbasestations.Interest ingly, EDGE was developed
from the desire of both GSM and IS-136 operators to have a common
technology path for eventual 3G high speed data access, but the initial
impetus came from theGSMusercommunity.
EDGE introduces a new digital modulation format, 8-PSK (octal
phase shift k eying), which i s u sed in addition 10 GSM's standard GMSK
modulation . EDGE allows for nine different (autonomously and rapidly
selectable) air interface formats, known as multiple modulation schems(MCS),
with varying degrees of error control protection. Each MCS state may u se
either GMSK (low data rate) or 8-PSK (high dara rate) modulation for
network access, dependingontheinstantaneousdemandsof thenetwork and

the operaring conditi ons. Because of the higher data rates and relaxed error
control coveri ng in manyoftheselectableairinrerface formats, the coverage
range is smaller in EDGE than in HSDRC or GPRS.EDGE is sometimes
referred to as Enhanced GPRS,or EGPRS [Noe01].
EDGE uses the higher order 8-PSK modulation and a family of
MCSsforeachGSM radio channelti meslot,sothateachu serconnectionmay
adaptively determine the best MCS setting for the particular radio
propagation conditions and data access requirements of the user. Th is
adaptive capability toselect the "best"air interface iscalled
incremental redundancy, whereby packers are transmitted first with maximum
error protection and maxjmurn data rate throughput, and then sub sequent
packets are transmitted with less error protection (usually using
punctured convolutional codes) and less throughput , until the link has an
unacceptable outage or delay.Rapid feedback between thebasestation and
subscriber unit then restores the previous acceptable air interface state, whichis

powerdrain.lncremenml redundancyensuresthat the radiolinkforeachuserwillquicklyreachacondition
thatusestheminimumamountofoverhead,there byprovidingacceptablelinkqualityforeachuserwhile
maximizing user capacity on the network. When EDGE uses 8-PSK modulation
without any error protection, and all eight times slots of a GSM radio
channel are dedicated to a single user, a raw peak throughput data rate
of 547.2kbpscanbeprovided.Inpractice,theslottingschemesu sedinEDGE,whencombinedwith
