MS (Water Resources Engineering), Mid Term Examination Spring 2020 CE-5123: Hydraulic Structures

The document provides instructions for a midterm exam on hydraulic structures. It includes two questions covering various topics: Question 1 asks students to (A) define and classify hydraulic structures based on material and function, and (B) draw layout plans and label components of three hydraulic structures. It also asks (C) what data is required for a concrete gravity dam and to present this data for Pakistan. Question 2 involves (A) drawing elevation curves for a reservoir based on contour data, (B) calculating dam height and drawing a cross section, and (C-E) analyzing the dam's stability considering overturning, sliding, concrete stresses, tensile stresses, and foundation bearing capacity. Part D instructs changing the

CE-5123: Hydraulic Structures

Time Allowed: One-week Max Marks: 100
Attempt all questions. Give answer briefly and to the point. Draw neat sketches where
required. Plagiarism check will be carried out for all the midterm papers. Excel can be
used where required but the final calculations should be presented here. You can email
or upload the excel sheet on google class room as well. Upload the mid term paper on
google class room. Emailed paper will not be entertained. Paper submitted after the
deadline will not be marked.
Question No-01: (25)
A. Define hydraulic structure and classify it on the basis of
a. Material (Draw figures)
b. Function
Further classify Hydraulic structures on the basis of function. Write names and functions of
these sub classifications. Give at least two examples of each classification along with clear
images.
B. Draw layout plan of the following hydraulic structures and also mention the names of
its different components
a. Gravity dam
b. Ogee type Spillway
c. Stilling basin
C. What type of data is required for a concrete gravity dam? Present all the required data
for a concrete gravity dam in Pakistan.
Question No-02: (75)
A. For the water shed shown in figure below draw Elevation-Volume and Elevation
Surface Area Curves on the same plot. Bed elevation at the valley center was
measured as 1970 feet where the surface area was 70 Acre-feet. The elevations of the
contour lines in feet are shown in Figure-01 on next page. For area calculations, take
vertical and horizontal dimensions of small square in figure-01 as 1000 feet each.

A. Calculate total height of the dam shown in figure-01, which can store total of 0.45
million Acre feet of water.
B. Draw the lay out plan of the dam cross section shown in Figure-01 if the u/s face is
vertical and the d/s face has slope of 1:1.5
C. For the geometry so obtained, carry out stability analysis for
a. Overturning, if Factor of safety required against overturning is 1.40
b. Sliding, if Factor of safety required against sliding is 1.20
c. Crushing of concrete at the toe and heel of the dam if allowable concrete stress
is 3000 psi
d. Existing of any tensile stresses in the dam body
e. Bearing capacity of foundation material if its allowable bearing capacity if 7000
Ib/ft2 (This value of bearing capacity can be assumed other than this value if
required)
D. If the existing dam geometry could not satisfy even single criteria out of five given
criteria above, change the dam geometry by changing the u/s and d/s slope and do the
analysis again until all the above five criteria are satisfied.
