Course Outline
Course Name ENGL3
Course Description This course is a public speaking course designed to equip students with oral and socio-
linguistic skills for academic and non-academic purposes. It emphasizes effective
ethical oral communication relevant to socio-business situations. The lecture and
laboratory components of the subject provide opportunities for learners to practice
speech deliveries in real world communication situations contextualized in their
respective disciplines. Oral Communication is English for Specific Purposes (ESP)
course that focuses on the production, delivery and assessment of the following: the
impromptu, lecture and/or persuasive speech for individual presentation and
group/panel discussion for group presentation. The presentations aim at providing
students first-hand experiences in public speaking to develop their self-confidence and
critical thinking
Course Learning At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

1. acquire understanding of the nature and function of language and effective
oral communication;
2. identify and observe correct pronunciation of critical vowels and consonant
sounds;
3. recognize and use correct prosodic patterns: intonation, stress, pausing and
blending;
4. understand the fundamentals of public speaking and group communication;
5. observe social and linguistic conventions in oral and interactional and
transactional discourse (e.g interview, asking and giving directions, etc.);
6. demonstrate active and critical listening;
7. demonstrate effective use of communicative strategy in a variety of speech
situations;
8. create and present a variety of speeches, such as informative, persuasive,
impromptu, and special occasion speeches;
9. speak clearly and spontaneously by adapting one’s speech to situation,
circumstances and people address;
10. use communication strategies (e.g paraphrase, translations and
circumlocution) to repair breakdown in communication;
11. use conversational gambits in face-to-face interactions to obtain information,
express modified agreements, etc.;
12. develop values of respect, tact, sincerity and integrity in their daily
conversation; and
13. realize the importance of functions, purposes, and principles of oral
communication in one’s daily life.
