Chapter 1
Many people agree that the most important tool you can receive in life is education
which brings us towards success. The more knowledge you build up, the more opportunity
which you can use to change the world. It means that education is so powerful tool which
to the study of Balfanz and Byrnes (2012) when a student continually fail to come to school
Schools strive for a common goal. That common goal is to mold the students, help
them enhance their skills and to have an outstanding academic performance. The school-
system has always wanted the best learning environment for students. However, schools
also deal with many obstacles that hinder student achievements. Issues which hinder
student-success are numerous. This study is focused on the causes, effects, and solution of
absenteeism.
The student who does not come in school regularly, not attended the class are called
absent. Some student come in school but not attended the class are also classified as absent.
Absenteeism is a period of time when a student does not school. In the study
conducted by Reid (2005) truancy is like absenteeism but truancy is an unexcused absence
from school or classes which parents typically do not know. According to Reid (2005)
In the study of Spring (2007) the system of public school always wanted the most
successful learning environment for student through the history of the school system,
schools dealt with many issues that impacted success. However, the issues that interfered
Student were absent from school for a variety of reasons, the absences were defined
into two categories. The categories included the excused absences and unexcused or truant
absences. According to the study of Reid (2005) excused absences were defined as
absences that had a legitimate reason. Absences that had no legitimate reason were defined
chronically absent or tardy to classes were more likely to struggle academically and affect
their class performance according to Cash and Duttweiler (2005). Reid (2005) said that the
main reason to absenteeism were the peers or influence of friends, teachers relation, interest
in the class, financial, bullying and learning abilities. Incidentally, this study will explore
which among the aforementioned factors are evident among senior high school students
regardless of the reason, lost the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge needed to be
academically successful.
The public education system problem was absenteeism. Schools had to identify the
reasons and what ways were appropriate to start to solve the problem. One study suggested
that personality traits had a direct relation or effect to school absenteeism. Louncbury et al
(2004) said that there are four aspects of personality traits were related to absenteeism.
Those four areas included aggression, optimism, tough mindedness and work drive.
Students that were less aggressive had a more positive outlook on school, dealt well with
adversity and had a solid work ethic were more likely to be present in successful
individuals. The researchers will explore what traits will be evident to the participants of
this study.
Schools had different strategies trying to lessen chronic absenteeism and tardiness
to classes. Some schools tried to reach out their help to those students that were typically
absent from school through intervention programs according to the study of Reid (2005).
Martin et al (2002) started that other schools used individual plans to best meet the needs of
the student that include behavior change programs, tutoring, teachers advocates,
partnership with businesses, truancy court advocates and counseling for students and
parents. Spring (2007) defined absenteeism a not simple problem. In fact, it continued to be
a major problem in public schools. Many schools had experienced success controlling
absenteeism by using prevention and intervention programs to help curb the situation. On
In the study of RI Kids Count (2007) students who did not attended school for a
long period of time or frequently misses school are classified as truant. These student for
go opportunities to learn. Furthermore, RI Kids Count (2007) concluded in the same study
that absenteeism increases with each grade level and students gradually become more
disengaged from school. Reid (2005) supported this idea and stated that absenteeism begin
in primary school and continue into secondary school which makes early intervention
necessary to try to prevent students from continuing on this path throughout their
educational experiences. The same observation was noted by the researcher in their
research locale which is the main reason as to why this study is being conducted.
Smirk and Reimer (2005) said that regardless of the type of absence from school.
School addressed the impact and consequences of the issues. Absences were found to
impact achievement levels on all student learning. Teasley (2004) said that truancy and
absenteeism have become a large problem with students today and receives little attention
due to the abundance of other issues and priorities that social workers and other service
Absenteeism and truancy is an ongoing problem. Even though many programs have
been put into place to control truancy rates, they may have done just the opposite. Teasley
(2004) states that there are short term consequences to students who commit absences from
school such as falling behind in school work, low educational success, poor social skills,
and isolation from friends. Long term consequences are related to joblessness and lowered
income. The consequences a student will face is not only limited to educational
consequences but legal consequences as well such as juvenile delinquency, alcohol and
There are also factors that are often not recognized to student absenteeism this are
weather and transportation problem. Teasley (2004) stated that severe weather issues could
contribute to a student not being able to leave their home, transportation issues such as
tricycles not becoming accessible or the car not starting, can affect a student’s ability to go
to school.
The study aimed to develop a paradigm regarding truancy in Pasig National High
The information in this study is important and will be beneficial to the following:
School Administrator: the result of this study will contribute to understanding the nature
of absenteeism. It will describe the causes, effects and possible solutions for the entire
school to use. The study will help the school and administrators to identify the cases of
absenteeism in Technical Vocational Learners of Senior High School and make a possible
Teachers: this study will help teachers recognize the factors that affect their class
attendance. Through this study, teachers will be able to come up with solutions for
absenteeism to reduce failure rate and save students at risk for dropping-out.
Guidance Counselors: the findings of this study will enhance the efforts and intervention
Students: this study will help students realize the essence of education. It will create
awareness in understanding the situation of absentees and realize the effects of long-term
truancy.
Future Researchers: this study may help the future researchers to make another related

Ethical Consideration
All of the information which will be gathered after the interview coming from the
participants will be treated as a whole rather individually. Issues regarding truancy are
considered sensitive therefore it should also be treated with utmost confidentiality. The
participants will be informed that in the study, each of them will be anonymously treated
Informed consents will be secured from the participants as this is one of the
essential tools for establishing rapport and respect for the participants during research. The
purpose of securing consent was to know the expectations in a research, including the
amount of time likely to be required for participation, the possible risks and benefits,
including psychological and social, that it is voluntary and that withdrawal of the
participants at any time with no negative impact is possible, and that confidentiality of the

In the initial stage of the paper, the researcher will obtain the permission of the
principal of Pasig National High School to conduct the study. Furthermore, they will secure
the informed consent of each participant in the study. The researcher will give a short
briefing concerning the nature and purpose of the research a week before the actual

Appropriate data analysis requires one to stay close to his data and interpret it from position
of empathic understanding.
The interview data will be audio-recorded and the interviewer’s notes will be
transcribed. During transcription, the researcher will listen to the tape recordings and
simultaneously encoded everything that has been said on the audio or video. After the
transcription, the data will be extract into units of meanings through key point coding. The
list of units of important meaning from each interview will be carefully examined to form
codes which will eventually be grouped into concepts. Afterwards, these similar
perceptions will be cluster to form themes or emerging topics and finally, create a
conceptual framework.

Peer Influence – Involvement with peers of the participants was confirmed by the
participants as a risk factor that triggered the student to be absent. Below are the responses
A student skips school and encouraged to do activities outside of the school with the
reinforcement of peers (Teasley 2004). Harries (1996) claims that peer groups are more
powerful than parents in shaping values. The choice of peer group could have a profound
Part Time Job – the need or initiative to help by means of working makes the
Part time jobs can harm studies. Students academic work may suffer because of part
time job but because of the need of the student to support their studies they are left with no
choice but to sacrifice their studies over work. This is supported by Albert, Quimba, Ramos
and Almeda (2012) who affirmed that poverty is a major reason why children start to work
at an early age, and the reason why they do not complete their schooling. Participants also
reveal that during class hours, they are away from school because they are working during

Another reason that was revealed by the participants is financial difficulty. The
participants experiencing financial difficulty that causes them not to attend class. This is
espoused by Gee and Krausen (2015) who conveyed that students from low-income
families unreasonably suffer from barriers to attendance such as lack of financial resources.
Having no money also mean you can do nothing. Money is the main source of a student to
comply with projects and other school requirements. Also, money is one of the basic needs
of a student, they need money to go to school especially if they are going to ride a vehicle
in order to go to school.
Household Chores – the role of a child in the house is cleaning the house.
However, this task is also one of the barriers that affect the student in going to school.
The children were assigned by the parents to do household chores. This is one of

family vehicle to transport children to school. This can be a particular barrier for low-

The participants believed that because of absenteeism they will be unable to help and
support their families in the future. They appeared to convey that supporting family is a

absences. They also have uncertainties in one’s future, difficulty finding a job, no
For students who experience financial difficulties, especially for less fortunate yet
deserving students, supporting them with their financial needs may be considered. In
addition, teacher’s role in motivating the students by providing moral support, and
developing their talents and skills in sports and other activities may encourage them to push
through with their studies. Further, learning and behavior modification start at home. Home
