Welcome to 8th Grade Math! This year in math we will be using an inquiry-based approach to learning. This means
that we will be exploring math concepts in many different ways including using real-world scenarios, traditional
instruction and group projects. Throughout the year, please visit the class website for assignments and rubrics.

Course Description

In 8th Grade Mathematics students will focus on formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including
modeling an association in bivariate data with linear equations, and solving linear equations and systems of linear
equations; grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; and analyzing
two and three dimensional space and figures using distance, angle similarity, and congruence, and understanding and
applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

Expressions and Equations
• Work with radicals and integer exponents.
• Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations.
• Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
Functions
• Define, evaluate, and compare functions.
• Use functions to model relationships between quantities.
Geometry
• Understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software.
• Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem.
• Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones and spheres.
Statistics and Probability
• Investigate patterns of association in bivariate data.

 Raise hand before speaking or moving from seat (unless otherwise instructed)
 Be prepared to learn/ bring all materials to class
 Follow directions the first time they are given

GRADING

Grading Scale Types and Weights of Assessments

A 93-100  Homework – 10%


B 85-92  Classwork participation – 20%
C 77-84  Quizzes/Test – 30%
D 70-76  Project(s) – 40%
F below 70

Homework: (10%)
Students will receive homework every night.  It is important that all assignments be completed on time in order to be
fully prepared for the quizzes and chapter tests.  All assignments will be graded for completeness and effort and will
be reviewed in class.  If a student has missed an assignment due to an absence, he or she should make it up following
the guidelines in the student handbook.  
Classroom Participation: (20%)
Students are expected to participate and be engaged during class. Students must complete in-class assignments, as
well as participate in class discussions. Points will be awarded based on the number of questions asked and answered,
bell-ringers, as well as completing assignments during class. 
Quiz/Tests: (30%)
Tests are an assessment of what the student has learned throughout the chapter. They should apply their knowledge to
similar problems that were taught during the chapter. Students should study prior to test day and be sure to respond to
all questions using the correct format (i.e. circle answer, answer in complete sentence and/or include units).

Quizzes could be on one or several concepts within a chapter. Students will quiz every Friday. It is important for
students to review their notes daily and be prepared!  Students will be required to keep an organized notebook of bell
ringers, notes, and assignments/quizzes.

Projects: (40%)
Students will receive a small project at the end of every unit. Students will have the option to work in groups or
individually. If a student wants to work in groups, he or she will be responsible for selecting group members. I, the
teacher will not select or assign students to groups. Students are encouraged to choose their group members wisely
and make sure they actively participate (in all aspects of the project if needed) to earn a suitable grade.

Extra credit will not be given to any student. Students must learn the importance of consistency and not rely on
additional assignments to raise their grade.

****ALL homework, quizzes and tests MUST be completed in PENCIL!!!

ixl.com login information. IXL is a self-paced website that allows students access to math practice in common
core standards whenever they want.
