This document contains 6 problems related to calculating stresses, dimensions, and displacements in structural engineering applications. Problem 1 involves calculating the outside diameter of a steel tube carrying a load. Problem 2 involves finding the maximum load on a steel plate between a wooden post and concrete footing. Problem 3 involves calculating the maximum height of a water tank given stresses in the steel plates. Problems 4-6 involve calculating stresses, required fasteners, and displacements in steel and concrete structural members under given loads.

1. A hollow steel tube with an inside diameter of 80mm is to carry a 350kN load.

What is the outside diameter of the

tube if the stress is limited to 130MPa.

2. A 10-in square steel plate lies between a 7-in diameter wooden

post and a concrete footing as shown in the figure below. Determine
the maximum value of the axial load P if the stress in wood is limited
to 1500 psi and that in concrete is 700psi.

3. A water tank, 19ft in diameter, is made from steel plates that are
3/5 in thick. (a)Find the maximum height to which the tank may be
filled if the circumferential stress is limited to 6600 psi. the specific
weight of water is 62.4 lb/ft3. (b) if ever there will be an outside
pressure of 11.2psi, what is allowable height of the tank?

4. The roof truss shown with its detailed connection at joint B,

using allowable shear stress of 65MPa and bearing stress of
the plate 140MPa.

Designation Area

Angle Bar BC – L75x75x6mm 864mm2

Angle Bar BE – L75x75x13mm 1780mm2

a.) What is the allowable axial stress in member BC (using the

gross area)?

b.) What is the allowable axial stress in member BE (using the gross
area)?

c.) How many 20mm diameter rivets are required to fasten member
BC to gusset plate? (Consider both shear and bearing stresses)

d.) How many 20mm diameter rivets are required to fasten

member BE to gusset plate? (Consider both shear and bearing
stresses) Note:
Angle Steel Bar dimension designation
L - H x W x t mm
Example:
L 75 x75 x 6mm

5. A loading platform is set horizontally on a steel pipe and a concrete block as

shown. The platform is a rigid steel that carries a concentrated load of 750kN and remains horizontal.
Ec=20,000MPa and Es=200,000MPa.
a. What should be the location of the point of application from the steel pipe that the platform should
remain horizontal.
b. What is the stress in the concrete and steel?
c. What is the vertical movement of the platform?
750kN

6. From the figure shown below, compute the elongation of steel and aluminum and the vertical movement of the
point of application of load. P=150kN
