What Is It
The set of numbers and figures in the previous activity are called sequence.
Each number in a sequence is called a term.
For example, the numbers 1, 11, 21, 31, 41, 51 is a sequence. The first term
is 1, the second term is 11, the third is 21, the fourth term is 31, the fifth term is 41
and the sixth term is 51.

Each term of a sequence can be represented as follows:
We need more than two terms to describe a sequence and the number of
terms of a sequence is denoted by n .
A sequence is a function whose domain is the finite set {1, 2, 3, …,n} or the
infinite set {1, 2, 3, … }.
Below are examples of the two types of sequence.

A sequence is usually given by stating the general rule or its nth term, hence
we can find its next few terms.
Example 1 Write the first 5 terms of the sequence whosen th term is given by
a n=2 n+1.
Solution: Since we are asked to find the first 5 terms of the sequence, then
we have to find a 1 , a2 , a3 , a4 and a 5 . Hence, the values of n to be substituted to
a n=2 n+1are 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Step 2. To find a 2 , substitute 2 to n of a n=2 n+1.
That is, a n=2 n+1→ a 2=2 ( 2 ) +1
a 2=4 +1
a 2=5
Step 3. To find a 3 , substitute 3 to n of a n=2 n+1.
That is, a n=2 n+1→ a3 =2 (3 )+ 1
a 3=6+1
a 3=7
Step 4. To find a 4 , substitute 4 to n of a n=2 n+1.
That is, a n=2 n+1→ a 4=2 ( 4 ) +1
a 4=8+ 1
a 4=9
Step 5. To find a 5 , substitute 5 to n of a n=2 n+1.
That is, a n=2 n+1→ a5 =2 (5 )+1
a 5=10+1
a 5=11
Therefore, the first five terms of the sequence are {3, 5, 7, 9, 11}.
Example 2 What is the 10th term of the sequence defined by the formula
a n=n2 +n−1?
Solution: Finding the 10th term of the sequence means that n=10. Hence, we
will substitute the value of n to a n=n2 +n−1 .
That is, a n=n2 +n−1→ a10=102+ 10−1
a 10=100+10−1
a 10=109
Therefore the 10th term of the sequence given by a n=n2 +n−1 is 109.
Solution: In the given example, we already know that a n=42. We are asked to
find the value of n when a n=42. To do this, we substitute the value of a n , which is 42
to a n=3 n−6 . Then, we have a n=3 n−6→ 42=3 n−6
Adding both sides by 6, 42+ 6=3 n
48÷ 3=16 48=3 n
48 3 n
Dividing both sides by 3, =
3 3
16=n
Therefore, 42 is the 16th term of the sequence a n=3 n−6.

What’s In
In the previous lesson, you had listed the terms of a given sequence provided
with its general rule. However, listing a few terms of a sequence is not enough to
determine its general rule or nth term, but you can make predictions by searching for
a pattern. However, there are sequences whose nth term are difficult to predict. That
is why it is necessary for you to learn the next topic.

What Is It
Were you able to predict the pattern easily given some of its terms? If not,
don’t worry, because you are about to learn how to find the general rule or nth term
of a sequence given the terms of the sequence.
There are two ways in finding the general rule of a sequence. One of these is
by inspection just like what we did with the sequence 1, 8, 27, 64. However, there
are cases when we cannot do it by inspection, but can be solved using algebraic
methods.
Example 1 Find the general rule or nth term of sequence 1, 4, 9, 16, 25,…
Solution: Observe that 1, 4, 9, 16, and 25 are consecutive squares of
integers.
Study the illustration below.

Note that when the integers (n) are squared, the result is the sequence 1,
4,9,16,25. Hence, the general rule of the given sequence is a n=n2 , so that
a 1=( 1 )2=1 , a2=( 2 )2=4 a3 =( 3 )2=9 , a 4=( 4 )2=16 ,a 5=( 5 )2=25.

Example 2 What is the nth term of the sequence 2, 3, 4, 5, ….?
Solution: We are given with the first four terms of the sequence. That is,
a 1=2 ,a 2=3 , a3=4 , a 4=5.

Note that when the integers (n) are added by 1, the result is the sequence 2,
3, 4,5,… Hence, the general rule of the given sequence is a n=n+1 , so that
a 1=( 1 )+ 1=2 , a2=( 2 ) +1=3 ,a 3=( 3 ) +1=4 , a 4=( 4 ) +1=5 ,a 5=( 5 ) +1=6.
Example 3 Find the general rule that describes the sequence -2, 0, 2, 4….
Solution: Observe that the general rule of the given sequence cannot be
easily determined by inspection. Hence, we will solve this algebraically.
Step 1. Make a table showing the value of n and a n .

Step 3. Since the differences are equal and a constant which is −2, it means that
the general rule of the sequence is linear in nature. Hence, we can use the linear
equation given by a n=an+b to solve for the general rule. To do this, we have to solve
for the values of a and b . Thus, we need two equations to begin with.
Note that in the table, when n=1 ,a n=−2. Substituting these values to
a n=an+b ,we get a n=an+b →−2=a ( 1 ) +b
−2=a+b equation 1
Also, when n=2 , an=0. Substituting these values to a n=an+b ,
we get a n=an+b → 0=a ( 2 ) +b
0=2 a+b equation 2
Step 4. Using equations 1 and 2, we will solve for the values of a and b by elimination
or substitution method.

0=2 a+b equation 2

Equations 1 and 2 can also be written as,
a+ b=−2 equation 1
2 a+b=0 equation 2
Since we already have the value of a , we can now solve for the value of b by
substituting a=2 to equation 1 or 2.
Hence, substituting the values a=2 and b=−4 to a n=an+b , we will have
a n=2 n−4.
Therefore, the general rule of the sequence is a n=2 n−4.
In Example 3-step 4 you can choose either eq. 1 or 2, but choose the simpler
one.
Example 4 Find the nth term of the sequence 3, 5, 9, 15, 23, 33, …
Solution: Observe that the nth term of the given sequence cannot be easily
determined by inspection. Hence, we will solve this algebraically.
Step 1. Make a table showing the value of n and a n .

Step 2. Find the difference between each term of the sequence. That is,

Step 3. Since the first differences are not equal, we get the second differences.
Observe that the second differences are equal and a constant which is 2, it means
that the nth term of the sequence is quadratic in nature. Hence, we will use the

quadratic equation a n=a n +bn+ c to get its nth term. To do this, we have to solve for
the values of a , b and c . Thus, we need at least three equations to begin with.
