Human Resource Management in Project
Management
Summary:
Human Resource Management (HRM) is the process of managing people and creating value
for an organization (Demilliere, 2014). In general, a project runs for a defined duration, like for 90
days, 2 years, etc. Due to such short span of projects, companies don’t usually assign a HR
department to Project team but rather assigns HR responsibilities to Project Managers to develop
and manage project team as HRM is considered as a strategic function by the companies. Hence, the
understanding of HRM is vital for project manager to successfully manage Projects and accomplish
the goals of the projects.
Project managers play an important role in development of high-performance project teams.
They recruit members, establish a team, create shared values, manage conflicts and a reward system
that encourages teamwork (Dinsmore & Brewin, 2011). In order for a project to be successful,
successful team management is required, and team management is a function of HR. The
presentation focuses on the process of team acquisition, development and management as it is
difficult and has to be done carefully to achieve project success.
The presentation also features 2 important concepts of team management that managers
often face i.e. Motivation and Conflict Management. The motivation theory focused here is Maslow’s
Hierarchy of Needs, a theory which is opted and used by the HR departments of many reputed
companies in the world. Needs are not permanent, when one need is fulfilled and satisfied, another
need arises. Those needs can be categorised in an order, like a hierarchy (Maslow, 1943).
Conflict management is another area where manager’s intrusion is frequently required. A
harmonious environment is the best working environment, but there is always some friction
between team members, departments, etc. For this, a deeper understanding of conflict
management and resolution is crucial for team management (Larson & Gray, 2011).
There are various theories and perspectives when it comes to Human Resource
Management in Project Management, but the core principles remain the same. This presentation
demonstrates the role of Human Resources in Project Management from an objective point of view,
and also highlights few HR concepts taken in consideration when managing a project team.
