"Love Is ": Wuthering Heights
"Love Is ": Wuthering Heights
Resources Needed:
Assorted magazines
Procedure:
Students should fill out the survey and discuss their different ideas. After discussion, as a class
read ee. cumming’s “i carry my heart with you (i carry you in my heart) and Margaret Atwood’s
“You fit into me.” Conduct a brief discussion over the two very different natures of love
presented in the poems. Next, split the class into several groups (about 3-4 each group). The
materials for this exercise should be laid out previously so students can easily gather materials; I
did this in stations, with each station having different materials for students to pick up.
2. Each group should get one poster board and several magazines, art materials, whatever they
might need.
3. Instruct the group of their task: they should read the poem in their group and discuss what idea
about love the poem is expressing. Then they should create a collage that reflects that idea. The
collages should incorporate the text of the poem. Students should entitle their collages as “Love
is…” followed by what their main idea is.
4. After creating the collages, groups will read their poem to the class and discuss how they chose
the images they used to represent the poem.
5. At the conclusion to the exercise, provide a brief intro to Wuthering Heights, hinting that just as
we discussed in the activity, throughout the novel Bronte discusses the complications and
complexities of love.
